Note: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of Elementary.

After seven years of solving the seemingly unsolvable, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Joan Watson closed their final case as Elementary drew to a close last night (August 15).

Jumping forward three years after the drama's penultimate episode, Elementary's series finale saw Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) back in New York City, while Joan (Lucy Liu) continued to assist the NYPD while raising her son Arthur – and battling cancer.

Another time-jump later stunned fans, when Holmes was seen attending a funeral and, for a brief moment, it looked as though Joan had passed away.

Fortunately, the funeral was actually for Natalie Dormer's devious Jamie Moriarty – who's "absolutely still alive", by the way – although Elementary's creator Rob Doherty did almost kill off one of his dream investigative team.

Whether his intended victim was indeed Joan or Sherlock will remain a mystery, however, with Doherty telling TVLine: "I confess I thought about one of them dying before all was said and done. I won't tell you which one. It was something I felt we at least had to talk about and explore."

Doherty admitted the series finale of an earlier project, Medium, changed his mind. "We, ultimately, settled on a story in which the husband of the main character dies. It felt incredibly appropriate to a show about ghosts and the afterlife and marriage," he explained.

"But there have been times over the years where I felt guilty about the way we ended it. As appropriate as it was and as proud as I was of what we did, it was heartbreaking that one character had lost her partner."

Despite insisting that he had no regrets over the Medium finale, Rob didn't want Elementary to follow the same path: "I didn't want to kill off another beloved character for the sake of ending a series," he said.

While we might never see Holmes and Watson crack another case again, at least we can rest easy knowing that New York's finest detectives are still out there working together – against Moriarty, probably.

Spin-off, anyone?

Elementary aired on CBS in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
