Elephant stampede: The real reason Trump is nixing the RNC in Jacksonville

It is the perfect comeuppance: The man who shouted “LIBERATE!” at states that were sanely hunkering down to prevent the spread of coronavirus has been forced to cancel Republican National Convention events in COVID-19-overrun Florida, his new home state, where he had moved festivities after Charlotte withdrew its welcome due to the virus.

President Trump, who resisted a full-throated endorsement of wearing masks for the longest possible time, who has hosted rallies filled with maskless individuals that have likely spread virus, who dreamed of another crowded arena as he accepted the GOP nomination, now has to settle for a virtual affair.

This is what we said would have to happen way back in March, understanding that packing thousands of people indoors is the perfect way to spread the deadly pathogen.

While it’s tempting to give Trump a microscopic particle of credit for acknowledging the obvious at the eleventh hour, he continues to twist the arms of public school districts in coronavirus hotspots to crowd kids into classrooms, which his own experts warn could infect thousands more Americans. And he continues to refuse to let states move en masse to voting by mail, giving millions of voters the choice between exercising their franchise and risking their lives.

Projecting the new public tone he has assumed on the coronavirus over the last few days, he now acts as though he understands it’s better safe than sorry. He probably just read the new poll showing him trailing Joe Biden in Florida 51% to 38%.
