Elizabeth River Ferry back in service after hitting seawall

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Elizabeth River Ferry has resumed service after having been suspended for several hours after hitting a seawall.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 19, the captain of Elizabeth River Ferry V approached the High Street Dock in Portsmouth too quickly, and hit the seawall with a passenger on board. No injuries were reported, and the U.S. Coast Guard was notified.

The ferry was taken out of service so crews could assess the damage. While waiting for a replacement, a shuttle was available to transport customers between ferry docks.

“We understand this is inconvenient for our customers,” said William Harrell, President and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. “But we want everyone to know we are doing everything we can to get the ferry back in service as soon as possible.”

Ferry service was restored around 8:30 p.m. using Elizabeth River Ferry IV, and shuttle service was discontinued.
