The City of Elk Grove is hosting a community breakfast this holiday weekend to commemorate the life and sacrifices of Martin Luther King Jr.

The city partnered with other community groups including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Committee and Cosumnes Community Services District, among others, to bring residents together for food, fellowship and enlightenment celebrating King’s impact on the world, observing his life and legacy.

The slogan for the sold-out event is, “Power plus love equals justice.”

One of the event organizers is Elk Grove City Councilman Rod Brewer, who was recently appointed as vice mayor. He wants people to join him, the City of Elk Grove and Cosumnes Community Services District in honoring King.

“Take this opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy and support his vision of creating a more equitable and inclusive world,” Brewer said. “The event features guest speakers, musical performances, activities and a delicious breakfast.”

Brewer, one of the originators of the event in 2019, said it’s the first time Elk Grove will host the event since 2020. The gathering was previously canceled after 2020 and four years later, it’s making its anticipated return.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast will begin at The Center at District56 at 8 a.m. Saturday, featuring breakfast prepared by Sacramento chef Derris Mosley of Our Place Event Space and Kitchen.

As of Monday, seats to the breakfast were sold out, according to the event’s Eventbrite webpage.
