Elk Grove police search for man who set off explosions in park bathroom, neighbor’s trash bin

Police in Elk Grove are still searching for the man they say is responsible for two explosions on back-to-back days this week.

Officers responded to the first explosion at Jones Park on Tuesday evening around 7:30 p.m. Someone had set off “high-grade illegal commercial fireworks” in the park’s bathroom, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.

The next day, around 7:40 p.m., another explosion went off on Baneberry Court. This time, the illegal fireworks were placed inside a trash bin on the street. Surveillance footage captured a man in a black hoodie riding a bicycle, placing something in the trash bin and then quickly riding away before the explosives went off.. The explosion caused significant damage to the bin, police said.

A spokesperson for the department said on Saturday morning that there were no further updates in the case.

“Anyone with information regarding this investigation can contact us at (916) 627-8097 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357),” the Elk Grove Police Department shared on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter).
