Elleda Wilson: Fallen eagle

May 5—Did you know there is now a small nonprofit mammal rehabilitation center, Peninsula Wild Care, in Ocean Park, Washington? It was founded in late 2021 by Reva Lipe (who has spent countless hours with the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Olney) and Liz Todd.

"We are permitted to rehabilitate small mammals, including all squirrel species, wild rabbits, mountain beavers and baby opossums," their website says. "We can help other species, including birds and other small to medium mammals, by rescuing and transferring to other permitted Washington wildlife centers." Which is exactly what happened recently.

"We got a call of two (eagles) seen fighting in air, and one fell to the ground," the rescue's Facebook post recalled, "... and with the help from the folks at Dunes Bible Camp, we were able to catch it. We transported it to Twin Harbors Wildlife Center in Montesano," which diagnosed him as being in guarded condition, with suspected internal injuries.

A Facebook update provided better news: "He is doing great, and was transferred to Paws Wildlife Center in Lynnwood."

Peninsula Wild Care survives on donations to care for their patients. You can help them help animals at peninsulawildcare.org
