Elleda Wilson: Tall ship totaled

Jan. 5—In sad maritime news, a movie star is gone, according to Maritime-Executive.com: The tall ship Earl of Pembroke.

Built in 1945 in Sweden, it was one of the last schooner-rigged sailing cargo vessels. In 1974, it was "discovered" by Square Sail. A refit transformed it into a three-masted 18th century barque that appeared in several TV and movie productions, including "Alice in Wonderland."

Sold in 2012, it participated in festivals in Northern Europe and the U.K. until it was sold again, in 2017, to Scarlet Sails , who provided the photo shown.

The ship spent its retirement moored at Den Helder in North Holland. Since there is no Motion Picture Country House for retired boat actors, and the maintenance costs "became unreasonable," the Earl of Pembroke was scrapped in December.

However, the tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain, out of Aberdeen, Washington, did not meet a similar fate, and is being restored in Hawaii. Follow the progress at sailhawaiianchieftain.com
