Ellet wins fifth City Series girls soccer championship in a row; Copley remains undefeated

GIRLS SOCCER

Ellet 8, Firestone 3

Senior Rachel Wenzel, senior Sydney Tucker and freshman Reese Tucker scored two goals apiece Wednesday night to lead host Ellet to its fifth City Series championship in a row.

Ellet built a 6-0 lead in the opening 13 minutes to take control and never trailed under coach Justin Dimengo.

Senior Charisma Smith and freshman Breeana Carpenter also scored a goal for Ellet (8-2, 2-0). Senior Alessandra Pinto had two assists, Sydney Tucker, Wenzel and Smith each had one assist.

Firestone sophomores Rachelle Athey, Kendall Ackerman and Hallie Lash netted one goal apiece. Athey and freshman Danielle Nelson both had an assist.

Walsh Jesuit 8, Mentor Lake Catholic 1

The Warriors (7-2-2, 3-0 Crown Conference) scored eight unanswered goals to win. Hannah Pachan scored four times and Kayla Flory found the net twice. Madison Humenik and Regan Pentz also scored as Walsh won it sixth match in a row.

Twinsburg 2, North Royalton 2

The Tigers (9-0-1, 3-0-1) had their nine-match winning streak snapped in a Suburban League National Conference match.

Rien Cummings and Jadyn Harris scored for Twinsburg. The Bears picked up goals from Kaitlyn Hajek and Alex Bottomley.

Hudson 6, Nordonia 0

The host Explorers built a 4-0 lead by halftime to earn a win.

Hudson sophomore Peyton Pierce scored three goals and had one assist. Senior Reagan Miele and freshman Ava Bell also scored a goal and Hudson benefited from a Nordonia own goal.

Hudson senior Katia Ikhlef had two assists, and freshmen Chloe Bigham and Maya Lake both had one assist.

Goalkeepers Emma Liesen and Samantha Rosenberg teamed up for a shutout.

Stow 4, Wadsworth 3

The Bulldogs scored two goals in each half to get the victory.

Sophia Yoder scored two goals for Stow and Mallory Fischer and Kaley Hobart netted one goal apiece. Corrine Casenhiser and Maya Haren had assists.

Wadsworth’s Adi Myers scored two goals and Korrine Braunlich scored a goal. Grizzlies teammates Allie Stoops and Kloe Wagner both had an assist.

Brecksville 7, Green 3

The Bees picked up a hat trick and assist from Shea Vidovic and two goals and a helper from Eva Sunjevaric in non-league action. Jillian Taylor had a goal and assist for the Bulldogs.

Copley 4, Barberton 0

Copley (11-0, 4-0) had a goal and assist each from senior Ashley Kerekes and junior Kate Young in a Suburban League American Conference win over the Magics.

Seniors Allie Arnold and Zara Warford also scored a goal for Copley.

Junior Kami Ayoup compiled her 10th shutout in a row with the help of her back line, seniors Megan Brewer and Gabby Niemczura and juniors Colleen Bauer and Sydney Leach.

Cuyahoga Falls 2, Tallmadge 1

Ellie Brustoski scored two goals to lead Falls (4-5-1) to a win.

Medina 1, Brunswick 1

The Blue Devils (5-6-1, 1-0-1) put a scare into the Bees in Greater Cleveland Conference play with a first-half goal from Kiley Deighton. Marissa Henderson scored with 12:37 left on a corner kick for Medina (8-1-1, 1-0-1) to preserve the tie.

Carson Weaver scored a goal in the first half and goalkeeper Josh Sumodi recorded a shutout to guide the Royals.

VOLLEYBALL

Archbishop Hoban 25-25-15-25, Beaumont 11-16-25-18

Anna Rumler spiked down 14 kills and Sophia Day had 23 assists to lead the visiting Knights (10-4) to a win.

Hoban’s Madison Kessler totaled 19 service points and six aces and Giana Mutersbaugh had 12 digs.

BOYS GOLF

Barberton 155, Copley 158

Marco Silva shot a 4-under-par 31 to lead Barberton to a win at the Firestone Public 9 in Akron. Copley’s Sean Nguyen posted a 38.

GIRLS TENNIS

North 5, Firestone 0

North swept all five courts to improve its overall record to 15-2 and its City Series mark to 6-0.

Oceana Lee, Prija Rai and Lhasang Tamang won matches in singles play.

Nirjana Tamang and Kajal Subba earned a win at first doubles and Prabina Majhi and Chandra Rai recorded a victory at second doubles.
