Ellington's Fisher stymies Manchester with complete-game softball win

Apr. 15—Camryn Fisher put together a dominating pitching performance Friday for the Ellington High softball team.

Fisher struck out 17 in a complete-game performance allowing one hit and her teammates pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 2-0 non-conference victory over Manchester.

Keyleigh Flaherty drew a one-out walk in the sixth for the Knights (5-0) and advanced to second on a Kate Czyz single.

Both runners moved up 60 feet on a pop-up for the second out before Flaherty raced home on a passed ball to give Ellington a 1-0 lead.

One batter later, Kaitlyn Kerstetter singled to center, scoring Czyz for a 2-0 lead. Czyz finished with two hits, including a two-out double in the first.

Amaya Caron had the only hit for the Red Hawks (2-3) on a two-out double in the fourth. Kathleen Regan struck out seven.

COVENTRY 1, ROCKVILLE 0. In Vernon, the second verse of the pitcher's duel between Coventry's Elizabeth Mitchell and Rockville's Alexis Real was as good as the first.

Meeting for the second time in three days, both pitchers again performed at a high level. But in the sixth inning Julia Boya stole third base and came home when the ball got past Rockville's third baseman to give the Patriots the NCCC win.

Mitchell fired a two-hitter for Coventry (6-0). The junior had one intentional walk and struck out nine. Real also allowed only two hits for Rockville (3-2). The Springfield College-bound senior walked none and fanned 17.

The Patriots won the first meeting Wednesday 2-1 in 11 innings with Mitchell's walk-off home run deciding it. In 18 innings against the Rams, Mitchell allowed one run on five hits with 29 strikeouts. In 18 innings against Coventry, Real allowed nine hits and three runs with 35 strikeouts.

Real had four of the five hits and the RBI against Mitchell, with her recording two hits Friday. With Real representing the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, she was intentionally walked.

Lindsey Harrington had the other hit Friday for Coventry.

SOMERS 6, NORTHWESTERN 3. In Winsted. Hailey Schafer's three-hitter paced Somers to the non-league win. She walked none, struck out three and the three Northwestern runs were unearned.

The Spartans (3-1) scored single runs in their four at-bats for a 4-0 lead. Northwestern (1-2) cut the gap in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth but Somers tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh to put it away.

Kiana Kalman was 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI for the Spartans. Sydney Cassidy added two hits and two runs scored while Lucy Catellier drove in a pair of runs.
