HARBOR SPRINGS — It’s been a gauntlet for the Harbor Light Christian boys’ basketball team to begin the 2022-23 season.

When the Swordsmen opened Northern Lakes Conference play on Thursday, that continued with of course the toughest opponent they could see, Ellsworth.

A close game throughout the first half and parts of the third, the Lancers pulled away from Harbor Light in the fourth behind a career night from Kelan Pletcher, with his 32 points leading Ellsworth to a 69-53 win.

Ellsworth improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Northern Lakes, while Harbor Light fell to 0-3 and 0-1.

The Lancers led throughout, including 12-10 after one quarter, 35-31 at the half and then 50-43 after three quarters.

Pletcher’s 32 points were joined by 17 points from Patrick Puroll and another 10 points from Jacob Jenuwine. Ellsworth coach James Willingham also credited Tyler DeYoung with a strong night on the board.

For Harbor Light, David Chamberlin led with 16 points, Kirk Rose scored nine and Andrew Stahl and Vaughn Henagan each scored eight.

Ellsworth will next travel to Mackinaw City for another tough NLC matchup on Monday, Dec. 12, while Harbor Light heads to Wolverine on Monday.

Alanson 88, Wolverine 63

ALANSON — The first win of the season was checked off for the Alanson boys’ basketball team Thursday, as they welcomed in Wolverine and lit up the scoreboard in an 88-63 final.

Christian Silveus led Alanson with a career-best night of 39 points, while contributing all throughout the court. Silveus added eight assists, six rebounds, six steals and four blocks in the game.

Also for the Vikings, Troy Johnson had 10 points and 15 assists, Mason Weidenhamer scored 22 points and added 17 rebounds and five assists and Donovon Honeysette pulled down 18 rebounds and had 13 points and four assists.

Now 1-1 overall and in the Northern Lakes, Alanson will next hit the road to Maplewood Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 15.

NON-CONFERENCE

Cheboygan 72, East Jordan 55

EAST JORDAN — Some youth showed for the East Jordan boys’ basketball team Thursday when they welcomed in Cheboygan for a non-conference tilt and took a 72-55 defeat.

The loss moved East Jordan to 1-1 overall on the season.

“Cheboygan did a great job of capitalizing on any of our mistakes,” East Jordan coach Nate Dzwik said. “We played really hard and we did a lot of really good things, we just couldn't finish in the paint and we didn't do a real great job of rebounding. I love their effort and how much they want to get better though.”

Cheboygan led just 23-20 after the opening quarter, though a seven-point advantage in the second made it a 43-33 game at the break and another big quarter followed in the fourth for the Chiefs.

Ryder Malpass led with 14 points for East Jordan and Max Beal scored 13 points. Devon Olstrom also scored nine and had seven rebounds.

East Jordan (1-1) will next welcome in Gaylord St. Mary on Monday, Dec. 12.
