Ellwood City Area Historical Society seeking scholarship applicants

ELLWOOD CITY – As part of its community outreach the Ellwood City Area Historical Society will be administering three scholarships this year.

Society President Bob Morabito said it is an honor to help students and encourages them to take advantage of these opportunities.

The Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarship awards two $1,500 scholarships to students in any curriculum in the Ellwood City area.

"The Robert and Janice Barensfeld Memorial Scholarship honors two of our society's cherished former members who played a critical role in making Ellwood such a great place to live and it is awarded annually," Morabito said.

The Marlene Painter Memorial Scholarship honors an extraordinary educator and encourages a Lincoln High School student to follow in her footsteps. The Marlene Painter Scholarship of $10,000 is restricted. The applicant must be a Lincoln High graduating student, entering the field of education. They must write a 400-600 word essay on the topic: “Why I want to be a teacher."

"We are proud to continue the tradition of helping local students further their formal education and life-long learning," Morabito said.

He said 2023 graduating seniors from Riverside and Lincoln high school and those who live in the 16117 ZIP code attending cyber school, career technical school, private or home school are encouraged to take advantage of the Robert and Janice Barensfeld scholarships.

Applications are available from the high school student guidance counselors at both high schools and at the Ellwood City Area History Center. The student must write a 400-600 words essay, researched and documented about the Ellwood City area. The history center can guide them to the research and topics.

The annual Ellwood City Area Historical Society Scholarship submission deadline is March 31 before 1 p.m.

Applications may be obtained at the History Center, 310 Fifth St., Ellwood City. The office is open Monday - Thursday from 10 am until 2 p.m. The telephone number is 724-752-2021.

Since 1999, the Ellwood City Area Historical Society has awarded 48 scholarships totaling $72,000.

Society Vice President Everett Bleakney said many of the previous winners, who have entered into many different fields of education and employment, continue to keep in touch with the center.

"We are certainly pleased that our contribution has helped them financially and encouraged them," he said.

The scholarship committee is comprised of four former school teachers: Angela Hyde, Kaye Houk, Barbara Mastropietro and Mary May.

"They have a wealth of knowledge, taught students in different categories. Together they select the finest entries," Bleakney said.
