Elmhurst Gym Suffers Coronavirus Outbreak

ELMHURST, IL — The Orangetheory Fitness gym in Elmhurt has experienced an outbreak of the coronavirus in recent days, the business confirmed Monday. The gym reported 18 positive cases.

"We are hopeful that everyone will return to health quickly and are working with local health authorities in the contact tracing process to identify any additional cases as soon as possible," the fitness center said in a statement. "We are constantly examining and evolving our internal policies and processes to ensure the safety of our staff and members."

Orangetheory, 135 N. Addison Ave., closed from Thursday to Sunday, as it investigated the outbreak and conducted additional deep cleaning and safety training procedures, the company said.

The DuPage County Health Department has confirmed it had received "multiple" coronavirus reports from Orangetheory last week.

"In our communication with Orange Theory, we have provided public health guidance and resources, and we are conducting case and contact investigations to help determine if exposure may have occurred on-site," spokeswoman Stephanie Calvillo said in an email to Patch. "We have also provided risk mitigation recommendations to prevent ongoing COVID-19 spread in the community."

Florida-based Orangetheory has more than 1,000 locations in the United States and around the world.

Over the last week, Elmhurst has seen the biggest increase in coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to health department numbers.
