Elmira College men’s hockey primed for postseason run

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira College men’s hockey is ready for more in the postseason.

After a stunning 3-2 overtime home win over Babson last weekend, the Soaring Eagles are alive and well heading into their next stretch. Now, Elmira (19-6-1) heads to Saratoga Springs Saturday night for a 7 PM clash against Skidmore College (18-6-2) in the NEHC Semifinals.

Both teams have traded blows all season long with Elmira and Skidmore winning one game each. Skidmore won the last game between these two teams on February 9 at The Domes 3-1. Elmira beat Skidmore 3-1 on the road back on January 6 besting the Thoroughbreds.

The Soaring Eagles are ranked #8 in the latest USCHO D-III Men’s Hockey rankings while Skidmore comes in at #12.

Saturday’s game proves to by physical and fast with a spot in the NEHC Championship on the line. Southern Maine will play at #1 Hobart also at 7 PM Saturday in the other semifinal. The title game is scheduled for Saturday, March 2 at a time and place to be determined.

Skidmore will have NEHC Goalie of The Year Tate Brandon in the cage on Saturday. Brandon did not play in the game that Elmira beat Skidmore in back in January. Tate did play in the Thoroughbreds win over Elmira a few weeks ago and the senior has been dominant this season with a .938 save percentage with just 40 goals allowed.

With a win, Elmira believes that getting to 20 victories on the year will propel them into the NCAA Tournament. Getting to the NCAA Tournament has been on Elmira’s mind since the end of last season as the program didn’t get in, losing to the same Skimore team 4-3 in overtime.

This year, Elmira hopes to return the favor and come out on top. 18 Sports spoke with the Soaring Eagles in preparation of Saturday night’s clash at Skidmore.
