Elmira and Edison High Schools raise money for cancer patients

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Competition is part of the atmosphere at any sporting event, and two opponents were able to incorporate that element into a fundraising effort to help fight cancer.

Elmira and Edison JV and Varsity basketball teams competed on the court and teamed up to raise donations for the Josh Palmer Fund. Elmira’s Ellie Clearwater and Edison’s Payton Littlefield were organizers in helping the matchup become a fundraising event, called the Hooping for Hope game.

“We knew that if we did the Josh Palmer fund, we would get so much local support because the fund does so much for local patients every single day,” said Littlefield. So that’s why we chose this foundation to donate to today, and it’s just crazy the amount of support we’ve had.”

“Our friendship started with our love of basketball, said Clearwater. “We figured a game like this would be perfect for us to do and it really has just sprouted from there and everyone’s been super supportive and we’re all super excited for it.”

In addition to the funds raised, an Elmira youth travel basketball team, the Junior Express, raised $2,245 from a free throw-a-thon. The team of young basketball stars embarked on the effort as a surprise for the JV and Varsity teams.
