Elmira man charged after Chemung County Jail assault

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — A Chemung County Jail inmate was charged after an assault caused another inmate to need stitches.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Michael R. Terwilliger, 31, was involved in an altercation at the Chemung County Jail on Jan. 27. Terwilliger punched another incarcerated person in the head three times before throwing a plastic thermos at him, according to law enforcement. The thermos hit the person in the forehead and caused a laceration that needed five stitches.

Terwilliger was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony.

Terwilliger is still incarcerated at the Chemung County Jail, and he will be arraigned in the City of Elmira Court at a later date.
