Elmira Police Officer involved in weekend crash

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — An on-duty Elmira Police Officer was involved in a vehicle crash on Sunday after being hit by another vehicle in the city.

According to a release from the Elmira Police Department, officers were working around Hoffman Street and Elizabeth Street for a disturbance call at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Police say that during this incident, an EPD Officer was stopped at the intersection of W. Washington Avenue and Walnut Street with their lights and sirens on when they were struck crossing the intersection by a car going south on Walnut Street.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Elmira Police told 18 News on Monday that the patrol car sustained significant damage.

This comes not even two weeks after an Elmira Police Officer was involved in a crash in a city police vehicle.

An investigation into the crash on Sunday is ongoing, with any additional information to come at a later date.
