Elmsford Superintendent Ronald Gonzalez resigns after eight months on the job

Elmsford Superintendent Ronald Gonzalez abruptly resigned Wednesday after just eight months on the job.

In a statement Thursday, the Elmsford school board said Jo-Anne Dobbins would serve as interim superintendent until the board could appoint someone to lead the district for the rest of the school year.

According to Elmsford school district's website, Dobbins is director of special education and pupil personnel services.

Gonzalez joined Elmsford as interim superintendent in July 2022 before becoming superintendent in March.

Gonzalez came to Elmsford from the Tarrytowns district, where he was briefly assistant superintendent for administration, curriculum and instruction. He served as principal of Mount Vernon High School from 2011 to 2021.

Gonzalez said in a statement: "It has been a pleasure and honor to serve the Elmsford students and school families as Superintendent of Schools. Aligning vision for learning with a full community and citizenry can be a fluid process. Therefore, after much consideration, I have decided to pursue other leadership opportunities in order to further my work on behalf of students. My time servicing the students, families and staff shows promise for their continued resiliency and commitment. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the District and its students."

The board thanked Gonzalez for his time as superintendent and said more information on the search for a new superintendent would be available in the coming weeks.

"It is our hope that we can find our next educational leader to assist us in moving the District forward for the start of the 2024-2025 school year," the statement said.

Elmsford's school year had a rocky start with voters rejecting not one but two budget proposals. The district could not increase its tax levy and is operating under a contingency budget for this school year per state requirements.
