A chorus of boos rained down on Elon Musk as comedian Dave Chappelle invited him onstage during a San Francisco stand-up set Sunday.

Footage shared online shows Musk waving as many at the Chase Center expressed their disapproval of the world’s richest man, who continues to cause controversy following his purchase of Twitter.

“Weren’t expecting this, were you?” Musk asks Chappelle amid the audience unrest, according to a YouTube video from user Matt Novak.

Chappelle then deadpanned, “It sounds like some of them people you fired are in the audience.”

Since his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in October, Musk has been criticized for firing much of the social media platform’s staff, allowing non-public figures to pay for verification and sharing an unfounded conspiracy theory about an attack on Paul Pelosi.

On Sunday, Musk wrote, “My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci,” in a tweet that drew backlash from vaccine advocates and from people accusing him of belittling inclusive pronouns.

Musk, 51, is the founder of the aerospace company SpaceX and the CEO of the electric car company Tesla. His net worth is $188.7 billion, according to Forbes.

“All those people who are booing, and I’m just pointing out the obvious, they have terrible seats,” Chappelle joked Sunday.

The YouTube video of Musk’s appearance claims in its description, “This video was deleted from Twitter for some reason. It’s being shared here in the interest of free speech.”

Chappelle, too, is no stranger to controversy. His 2021 stand-up special “The Closer” garnered criticism due to the comedian’s jokes about the transgender community.
