Elton John celebrates 30 years of sobriety on Instagram

Sir Elton John celebrated 30 years of sobriety Wednesday with an Instagram post where he said he would dead if he had never asked for help.

“Reflecting on the most magical day having celebrated my 30th Sobriety Birthday,” the “I’m Still Standing” singer wrote on Instagram along with a photo of various sobriety chips and greeting cards, a photo of a 30-shaped caked festooned with cream and berries and a photo of his 30-year chip from Alcoholics Anonymous.

“So many lovely cards, flowers and chips from my sons, David, friends in the Program, staff at the office and in our homes,” the Grammy-winner wrote on Instagram on Thursday. “I’m truly a blessed man. If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way.”

The “David” in the post is the singer’s husband, David Furnish.

John, who was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, has been open about his struggles and previously compared recovering from drug and alcohol addiction to being reborn.

“You are so stripped down and completely vulnerable. It’s like starting life over with a new rule book for living. I felt trepidation about how I would be able to do anything again,” he told Variety in 2019.

The five-time Grammy winner’s struggle with substance abuse was recently documented in the film “Rocketman,” starring Taron Egerton.

John has been staying busy throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this week, he as among dozens of prominent musical acts to sign an open letter calling for all political campaigns from using music at rallies and events without permission. He has also been posting videos of classic concerts on YouTube every Friday.
