Elyria man, 26, dies in vehicle crash on Route 18 near Montrose in Bath Township

An Elyria man was killed in a crash early Saturday morning in Bath Township, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at 2:28 a.m. on state Route 18 near Heritage Woods Drive. A 1997 Chevrolet S-10 driven by 26-year-old Joseph J. Perry Jr. of Elyria was traveling westbound on Route 18 when it struck the rear of a 2020 Kenworth semitractor driven by Michael J. Smith, 47, of Canton.

Perry was pronounced dead at the scene by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Akron Post of the highway patrol. Smith did not report any injuries.

The Bath Township Police Department and Fire Department assisted at the scene.
