Filiberto was arrested Saturday after police said they saw him speeding and running stop signs while drunkenly driving. They said he also had cocaine on him.

The Palm Bay City Council did not have the power to oust or suspend Filiberto, so the council unanimously voted Thursday to send a letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office, asking him to suspend Filiberto.

“I hereby resign as a councilmember for the city of Palm Bay effective immediately,” Filiberto said in his resignation letter addressed to the city’s mayor and residents.
