Emerald Fennell has confirmed that her proposed Worlds of DC film focusing on Zatanna has been cancelled.

The director, writer and actor, who has worked on Killing Eve and Call the Midwife, was announced as the screenwriter for the project back in 2021. However, news on its development since has been scarce.

Fennell, who also starred in The Crown, has now confirmed that the project has been scrapped following major leadership changes at DC Studios and James Gunn's and Peter Safran's restructuring of plans for its movies, TV shows and more going forward.

"No, no, it's not happening. I loved it [though]," she told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "This was all before Promising Young Woman, actually. It was when JJ Abrams had just arrived at Warner Bros – [he] was going to reboot the Dark Universe.

"They were going to make this kind of dark villain universe or sort of hero/villain universe. I thought he was the coolest – his team at Bad Robot was so interesting because I love genres of all kinds. I was definitely interested.

"I was like, 'I don't know a huge amount about the whole superhero genre; it's not a genre I naturally gravitate towards, so I'd love to know how does one make a film like that…' So it was that kind of thing, and Zatanna was a really, really cool character."

Whilst the Zatanna project is now scrapped, fans of Fennell's work can rejoice that her new movie Saltburn is now available to stream just in time for the Christmas and New Year period.

The movie's star Barry Keoghan recently spoke about the upcoming release, sharing his nervousness regarding that closing scene.

"They can press pause... and look at it," he remarked, referencing his nude dance scene soundtracked by Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Murder on the Dancefloor'.

"That's one thing that kind of freaks me out, is that people can [do that]."

Saltburn is now streaming on Prime Video.
