After five years of providing a variety of aesthetic medical treatments, Emerge Medical Spa is ready to expand.

In 2019, family medicine practitioners Dr. James Miller and Tamie Starner, a certified nurse practitioner, opened the medical spa at 1397 N. Monroe St. as an extension of Monroe Medical Associates.

Halie Duke of Brownstown Township, a registered nurse injector, said due to the clinic’s success, plans are being made to hire more staffing and add additional rooms for client services.

“It started with just me, but now we have four employees and a medical director,” Duke said. “I am a certified laser technician, a certified skin care specialist and a registered nurse injector.”

Typically, spa services can include inner wellness and beauty treatments. Medical spas operate under the supervision of medical professionals which allows them to offer medical-grade anti-aging treatments and skin care along with traditional spa treatments.

Some of the treatments offered at Emerge are botulinum toxin injections (Botox), injectable dermal fillers, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing and microblading. However, none of the services are covered by insurance.

Popular services among clients are the medical-grade facials designed to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. Facials help address the signs of aging and issues ranging from dehydrated skin to acne breakouts and are recommended every two to four weeks.

Duke said the spa’s most popular services are Botox and filler injections. Botox treats the appearance of wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions like smiling, squinting and frowning.

According to Emerge’s website, the Botox procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes for the entire appointment and results can been seen within a few days and can last up to three to four months. Dermal fillers add volume to the lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, jaw line and back of the hand.

“We do treatments for body sculpting,” Duke said. “We also do deep facial resurfacing called the Halo laser. It’s for deep lines, wrinkles, signs of aging, dark spots and acne scars. The Moxi laser is used for fine lines and is also used in treatment for melasma (a skin disorder which causes brown blotches on the face), pore size and the tone and texture of the skin.”

A list of services along with detailed information about the treatments can be found on Emerge’s website, www.emergemedicalspa.com.

The spa offers services for both men and women. Emerge's clients are in their mid-20s and older.

“Our clients have to be over the age of 18 for hair removal and laser for acne scarring,” Duke said. “Teenagers would need a parent’s consent to have services like microneedling or a facial.”

When it comes to cool sculpting, a fat-reduction procedure, Duke said some of the most common areas treated are the abdomen and flanks, also known as love handles.

“I usually recommend a series of two treatments, about 45 days apart,” she said. “But our newest body sculpting machine, the EmSculpt, has been the most popular. The results are a permanent reduction of fat cells.”

Of the services provided at the spa, Duke can provide first-hand experience. The 30-year-old has tried a variety of them from Botox to cool sculpting.

“I’ve done all three lasers,” she said. “I love the treatments here.”

Recently, Karen Neely traveled from Westland to have a lip filler injection and, for the first time, a laser treatment for underarm hair removal.

“It felt like when you get snapped with a rubber band, so it wasn’t that painful. It was tolerable and very fast,” Neely said. “This is my second time having the lip filler done. My upper lip is really small and it bothers me so I have the injection for a fuller lip and I know Halie. She’s very knowledgeable and she really does a great job.”

Many of spa’s clients are booked through referrals and social media.

“Our business is growing. We’re taking rooms from the medical side of the building so that we’ll have more space for our clients and we’re hiring a massage therapist. It’s really exciting to see all the new things being planned,” Duke added.

Future business plans for the medical spa include building a new facility and possibly offering its own line of skin care products.
