Emergency cold weather shelters opening this weekend across Treasure Coast

Emergency cold weather shelters will open in all three Treasure Coast counties this weekend as temperatures are expected to drop, according to officials.

In Fort Pierce, In the Image of Christ, a faith-based, nonprofit organization, will operate a shelter at Percy Peek Gym, 2902 Avenue D in Fort Pierce, in partnership with St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce. The shelter opened at 5:30 p.m. Friday and closes at 10 a.m. Sunday.

In Stuart, a shelter will open at 5 p.m. Saturday at the 10th Street Community Center, 724 SE 10th St., according to Martha Ann Kneiss, Martin County spokesperson. She said the shelter, operated by Martin County and a variety of community partners, will close at 8 a.m. Sunday. Registration is not required.

In Indian River County, the Vero Beach area Salvation Army at 2655 5th Street SW announced a cold weather shelter would be available for the first 40 people to arrive beginning 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The facility will close the following morning at 7 a.m., according to a press release.

Also in the Vero Beach area, The Source charity center at 1015 Commerce Ave. announced its 36-bed "Dignity Bus" would be available beginning at 9 p.m. during the bout of cold weather, according to the press release.

Temperatures are expected to dip to the mid-40s this weekend with wind gusts reaching 30 mph.

Kneiss said temperatures are expected to remain above freezing, with the coldest weather to be experienced Sunday morning.
