Emergency responders were attempting to rescue a hiker who became trapped between two rocks on Bishop Peak in San Luis Obispo on Saturday evening.

A call for aid was made to Bishop Peak at 4:19 p.m., according to emergency response app, PulsePoint.

San Luis Obispo Fire Department Battalion Chief Ray Hais said a 40-year-old woman was hiking alone with her dog when she slipped and fell at the top of the mountain and became “wedged between the two rocks and was unable to get out.”

Hais said communication with the woman — who spoke Spanish — was initially “a little difficult,” but a helicopter airlifted a member of the county’s Urban Search and Rescue team to the top where he was able to translate and help coordinate resources.

“Now what we have is basically an operation to get her out from between the rocks,” Hais said as of 5:30 p.m.

Once she was removed from the rocks, he said crews would probably walk her back down the mountain since the helicopter would no longer be operational after dark.

Hais added the woman was not hurt.

Four crews were on scene from both the city fire department and Cal Fire.
