Emergency sirens to be installed in Brown County communities

BROWN COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Rural communities in Brown County will soon have emergency sirens to alert residents of emergencies such as fires and tornadoes.

On Wednesday night, Pat McLaughlin III, who is the Brown County Director of Grants and Government Affairs and candidate for County Commissioner Precinct 3, presented to the Brookesmith ISD Board of Trustees. He announced that he had secured a grant worth $233,205 for the installation of seven sirens and related support materials.

Emergency sirens will be placed in six different areas: May, Blanket, Zephyr, Indian Creek, Winchell, and two in the Brookesmith area. Brown County officials are also in the application process of adding two more emergency sirens in Early and the Lake Brownwood area. These sirens are equipped with solar panels, allowing them to run without electricity in case of a power outage.

In two weeks, there will be a kickoff meeting with the Texas Division of Emergency Management on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Tentatively, there is one year to complete the process. However, the process could take longer due to FEMA’s procedures.
