Emerson Street fire displaces 6 Evanston residents

A two story multi-residential unit on Emerson Street in Evanston caught fire and displaced six residents on Tuesday night according to a release from the Evanston Fire Department.

The fire at 2002 Emerson Street began just before 5 p.m. on Jan. 25 and firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor. Firefighters called for assistance from neighboring units for the second alarm fire.

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes only damaging the unit it began in. Extensive smoke and water damage displaced all the residents in the building. One resident was escorted out by firefighters, two were given medical care and one was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No firefighters were injured.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced with emergency services and housing.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
