The 19-year-old child of Marshall Mathers III, better known to the world as rapper Eminem, has come out as genderfluid in a moving TikTok video.
Captioned "forever growing and changing <3," the video follows the journey of Eminem's child Stevie becoming their truest, most authentic self.
"Watch me become more comfortable with myself," on-screen captions read as the video opens.
What follows is a series of pictures in rapid succession taking viewers along the transformative process for Stevie, who Eminem legally adopted from a previous marriage back in 2005. The captions track the change in pronouns along the way as well. At the present time, Stevie uses all pronouns.
And during Pride Month this past June, he officially asked his Instagram followers to call him Stevie.
Though he formed an unlikely friendship with gay musical icon Elton John over 20 years ago and has collaborated with many vocal allies like Rihanna and Jay-Z during his career, Eminem, 48, has a complicated past when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, including a history of repeatedly using anti-gay slurs in his music.
In his third studio album The Marshall Mathers LP (released in 2000), the song "Criminal" contained some highly offensive lyrics. In one stanza he wrote his words are like daggers that will "stab you in the head whether you’re a f*gg*t or a les" and rhetorically asking himself "Hate f*gs? The answer’s yes."
In 2018, he used a variation of the same anti-gay slur against fellow rapper Tyler, the Creator in the video "Fall" where he called out Tyler for a previous public diss.
"Tyler create nothing, I see why you call yourself a f*gg*t, b*tch," Eminem said, later adding that the young rapper had an obsession with his rap group D12’s testicles, calling him "sack-religious."
Eminem later apologized for his anti-gay language.
Luckily for Stevie, Mathers appears, from all accounts, to be a loving and supportive father.
Congrats on coming out, Stevie!
