Emma Cannon leads Mount Union women's basketball team to victory over Geneva (Pa.)

With a lineup featuring just one starter from last season, the Mount Union women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with an 89-75 victory over Geneva (Pa.) on Wednesday night at Timken Gymnasium.

The Purple Raiders were led in scoring by Emma Cannon, the lone starter from last season in the first five on Wednesday, with 18 points in 24 minutes of action. Cannon was an All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team selection in 2022.

Three other players scored in double figures for Mount Union: Gretchen Koken came off the bench to record 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Ali Hudik and Audrey Livesay finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Mia San Nicolas led Geneva (0-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Isabella Roth added 17 points while Taylor Haring, in a reserve role, added 14. Emily Bucheit also had 10 rebounds.

Mount Union took control of the game early, outscoring Geneva 28-14 in the first quarter and 22-10 in the second period for a 50-24 advantage at halftime.

The Golden Tornadoes closed the margin to 14 points (67-53) after three quarters but could not get any closer.

Mount Union will play Manchester (Ind.) at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Wilmington, Pa., in the Teammates For Life Tip-off Tournament at Westminster College.
