Emma Cannon, Mount Union enter Christmas break on a high

The Mount Union women's basketball team picked up a 78-58 non-conference victory over Westminster (Pa.) Saturday afternoon at the MAAC.

The Purple Raiders (3-4) were led by Emma Cannon, who scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and also grabbed nine rebounds.

Sophomore Sarah Meech and junior Gretchen Koken also provided double-digit scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Mount Union.

Westminster (3-4) was led by Camden Hergenrother, who scored 19 points.

Mount Union jumped out to a 14-4 lead with Cannon scoring eight of those points. The Raiders extended their lead to 22-8 before Westminster scored the final four points of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Mount Union go on a 13-8 run taking a 19-point lead with 5:50 left in the half. Westminster closed the score down to 39-28 but a Meech three gave the Raiders a 42-28 lead at the break.

Westminster got no closer than 14 points as Mount Union pushed the lead to 23 twice, with the last one coming off a three-pointer by sophomore Maddy Miles with 3:35 remaining in the game.

Mount Union finished the game with a season-best 13 three-pointers, shooting 52 percent from beyond the arc.

Mount Union now heads into Christmas break and plays its next game against Mount Aloysius (Pa.) on December 29 at 8 p.m. at the Ohio Wesleyan Bishop Classic in Delaware, Ohio.
