Emmanuel Lutheran to host One Book-related panel via Zoom

Oct. 6—Emmanuel Lutheran Church will host an interfaith panel on Thursday to address the experiences of the disabled.

This event, which will be held via Zoom, is part of the programming for the One Book Project, which is highlighting "Sitting Pretty: The View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body" by Rebekah Taussig.

Each year Emmanuel Lutheran takes part in the One Book programming by offering a panel approaching the themes of the selected book from a faith-based perspective and shines light on the spiritual and ethical questions the book raises.

"Beautiful, Broken, Blessed: World Faith Traditions and the Experience of People with Disabilities" will bring together spiritual leaders for a lively interfaith conversation.

Panelists taking part are:

—The Rev. Craig Alan Satterlee, Ph.D., bishop of North/West Lower Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

—Dr. Shaheer Afaqi, assistant professor of religious studies at Cal State Bakersfield, representing Islam

—Alan Salazar, a Chumash and Tataviam tribe elder

—Rabbi Jonathan Klein of Temple Beth El

People with disabilities are invited to share their lived experiences with faith traditions. Those who have a personal experience they would like to share in advance can email Dawn Wilder, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran and event moderator, at pastordawn@emmanuelbakersfield.org.

This panel will be held via Zoom Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The public is invited to sign up for the free Zoom discussion. Participants can register now and up to one hour before the program at emmanuelbakersfield.org.

Everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions and add to this interfaith conversation. Everyone is welcome! Comments may also be made via chat during the Zoom discussion. The panel discussion will be available later via Emmanuel Lutheran's YouTube channel linked on its website and Facebook page.
