Emmerdale star Louise Jameson has revealed a turning point in Mary Goskirk's storyline in new scenes.

Mary has been through a difficult time recently, notably after being scammed by former love interest Faye Helders, who turned out to be a con artist and went on to share an intimate photo of Mary with everyone as part of a revenge porn storyline.

Speaking about Mary's tough time dating recently, Louise explained: "After finally coming out, only to have the person she considered to be the love of her life, betray her this way, it’s been tough."

The actress admitted the experience has "completely shaken her confidence", noting: "There’s a huge strength in being vulnerable, strength because it is a risk. Mary took the risk and it didn’t pay off."

"The photo that circulated certainly embarrassed her, especially in front of her granddaughter," Louise added. "I think the overriding emotion she is feeling is guilt though. That her friends dipped into their own pockets, because of Mary's enthusiasm about fundraising for a women’s shelter."

Asked whether this is why she hasn't admitted her fears over dating again, Louise said: "Mary is a woman with a lot of pride (no pun intended) and has had to cope with a lot in her life (as does everyone in soapland) – and she certainly doesn’t want to appear weak and vulnerable at this precise moment in time. She has only recently been those things and look where that’s got her."

As part of her storyline, Rhona reaches a breaking point and decides to organise a 'face your fears' day for Mary, Paddy and Marlon so that they can tackle their issues head on.

"[Mary] is very daunted to hear what Rhona has planned. Mary’s very good at solving everyone’s problems but her own," Louise revealed, though her character is pleased to have their support, suggesting a turning point.

"By the end she’s very touched to feel so supported. In fact I recorded a line yesterday whilst filming ‘I love it here, don’t you, everyone chipping in supporting each other’ – and this particular story line has given her this train of thought."

Addressing whether she loves her life in the village knowing she has that support, Louise explained: "She doesn’t belong anywhere else. Her husband has died, her best friend has died. She’s more or less repaired the relationship with her daughter. She loves Marlon and the two grandchildren – where else should she be?"

Speaking on whether its good to tackle things head-on, the star said: "Usually I would say ‘yes’ – as long as you have all the facts at your fingertips, and you are armed with everyone’s side of the story – if there’s a problem then there’s a solution, if there isn’t a solution then it’s a fact of life and has to be lived with."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
