Emmerdale's Belle Dingle and Tom King saw their blossoming romance hit the rocks in tonight's (May 24) episode.

In the latest instalment of the ITV soap, Tom was continuing to struggle with all the recent revelations about his family. His father Carl killed his grandfather and attempted to sexually assault Chas.

Belle wondered how Tom would react if he knew that she, too, was responsible for someone dying, specifically when she accidentally killed her friend Gemma after an argument got physical.

Although it could mean the end of their relationship, Belle was determined to be honest with Tom about it and how it affected her mental health.

Unfortunately but not surprisingly, Tom didn't react well to the news and stormed out. "I'm sorry, but this is too much for me to take in," he said. "I need time to think about it."

Things went from bad to worse as Jimmy approached Tom in the pub, with Belle beside him, determined to defend Carl and explain the history from his point of view.

"I don't think you know everything that was going on," Jimmy stated. "When he died, he was the most hated man in the village. Twelve different people were suspected of killing him, including me."

An altercation broke out between the two as Tom explained that every time he did something wrong, his mother would coldly state she saw his father in him.

"Just admit your brother was a murderer and a rapist and we should all be glad he's dead," Tom said to Jimmy, before telling him and Belle that he should never have come back and wants nothing to do with them.

Naomi managed to break the argument up before barring them both, but it looked like his relationship with Belle had hit an impenetrable wall.

Interestingly, following a heart-to-heart with Lydia, it was Belle who decided to call things off with Tom. She told him: "I don't wanna apologise for the person that I am, and I don't wanna turn myself into a girl that I think you'd be happy with."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
