PETOSKEY — The Emmet County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved two grant requests for court and law enforcement programs during their meeting on Monday, Oct. 9.

The first request involves the 57th Circuit Court’s Recovery Court program.

“Last year, they received a grant to put together a felony drug court. They’re calling it Recovery Court,” said county administrator David Boyer. “Now they have received funding from the state of $40,000 to implement a program. They also have received some funding from Northern Michigan Regional Entity to cover the rest of the cost of the program. As we go through the budget process, you’ll see this budget coming forward. Right now, it’s all grant funded.”

According to agenda materials, Recovery Court “has a mission to promote public safety and contribute to a reduction in substance use and recidivism among nonviolent substance abusing offenders by connecting individuals back to the community and encouraging individuals to live life on life’s terms. The overall goal of the program is to access necessary funding to complete the planning period and implement an adult hybrid felony level drug court in Emmet County.”

The second grant comes from the Enbridge Fueling Futures program for the Emmet County Sheriff's Office.

“They have a need for dry suits for their dive team and were awarded a grant of $10,000 to help offset the cost of the dive suits,” Boyer said.

According to agenda materials, the department had previously identified the need for equipment upgrades, citing failures with their current dry suits.

The next Emmet County Board of Commissioners meeting is at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19.
