Emmy award winner tops June recognition list in Craven, Jones counties
City residents continue to do great things to enrich the lives of those in the community. Awarding scholarships, presenting awards and bringing cultural entertainment to local venues are just to name a few.
Here is what some supporters are doing in the area.
Local nonprofits receive donations
The Junior League of Greater New Bern awarded a total of $10,000 to four local organizations, Craven Literacy Council, We Can Be Association, Laundry Love and True Justice International.
The Junior League hosted a recognition reception on June 20 at Union Point Park to recognize the four organizations and congratulate them in person. The money granted was raised at the League’s annual Kentucky Derby Fundraiser through ticket sales and silent and live auctions.

African dancers to present workshop
Arts To End Genocide, the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Plain and Faith Connection will present The South West African Dance Theatre in dance performance and workshop for folks to learn these traditional dances. Children from the Boys and Girls Club will be part of the performance and workshop. The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Aug. 20, at the J. Murphy Smith Center, located at 508 Middle St. Tickets are available at the Bank of The Arts, Mitchell’s Hardware and Fuller’s Music. Donations are $10 and $4 for 18 or under. There will also be tickets available at the door on the day of the performance.

SA Troop 97 Scouts complete Aviation Merit Badge
Boy Scout Troop 97 (Beech Grove UMC, New Bern) recently toured Michael J. Smith Airport in Beaufort to complete the requirements of their Aviation Merit Badge. Hosted by Rich Shapero of Morehead City, the Scouts participated in an aircraft preflight inspection and experienced flight in a single-engine airplane over Morehead City and Beaufort. This was a first time flight event for the majority of the scouts. They also learned about the wide variety of aircraft parked on the airport ramp, including the trainers used by Crystal Coast Flight School and an ultra-modern Citation 10 business jet, the fastest business jet in production. Additionally, they visited Crystal Coast Skydiving where they learned how a parachute was packed, met students and licensed skydivers.
Climbers Club presents scholarship
The Climbers Club of New Bern, the oldest African American Women’s organization in New Bern, presented its 2022 annual scholarship award to Phu Aung, a super-senior with the Craven Early College high school and will graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate Degree in Science. Annual scholarship awards are one of several educational initiatives for the Climbers Club membership. It is a legacy activity from founders Carrie Rhone Smith and her sister Charlotte S. Rhone who founded the club in 1921. Current Climbers Club President Nanette Sanders-Cobb presented the scholarship to Ms. Phu Aung on May 7 at a ceremony held at Grover C. Fields Middle School.
UUFNB aids in city cleanup
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern is collaborating with the New Bern Parks and Recreation Department in an initiative to keep the city’s waterfront parks trash-free and inviting for residents and visitors. This ongoing effort along the Waterfront Park area has been occurring every two months for over a year. The UUFNB's park cleanup initiative was recently recognized by the Faith Connection of New Bern at its “Stewards of the Earth” forum for its work in breaking new ground in creative and faithful community outreach in improving the environment. UUFNB is a multi-cultural interfaith organization serving New Bern and surrounding communities with an emphasis on diversity of thought and beliefs, sense of community, inclusiveness, spirituality and progressive moral values.

Emmy winner to present program at Tryon Palace
Emmy Award winner Bryce Lane will present “History of Gardening: How Cultures, Events, and People Made Gardening What it is Today,” at 10:30 a.m. July 9, at Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center on July 9. Lane will speak on historical events, peoples, and cultures that helped to make gardening what it is today. The program is offered free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Jones County student wins first place in state competition
Paxton Banks, a student at Pollocksville Elementary, recently won first place at the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Annual State Poster Contest. He also took first place for 3rd grade at district and area level judging. Each year the Jones Soil and Water Conservation District extends an invitation to 3rd through 6th grade students in Jones County to showcase their creativity through the annual poster contest. The contest purpose is to provide students an opportunity to become aware of and share their concerns for soil and water conservation through poster art. Teachers who have district first place winners will each win a cash prize.

Nursing students receive scholarships
Recipients of the annual Joseph Hageman Nursing Scholarship were celebrated at a dinner at the Flame Catering & Banquet Center on June 1. Three nursing scholarships in the amount of $7,500 were presented to students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. Recipients were Darby Faraci, Hannah Jackson and Morgan Wells, all of New Bern. Four scholarships of $3,000 were presented to students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree. Students were Sabrina Cahoon of Beaufort, Kara Gass of New Bern, Nyithazin Ngwe of New Bern, and Ines Perez-Chavarria of New Bern. Two scholarships of $2,500 were presented to New Bern residents Jasmine Hodge and Asia Roberson, who are both pursuing a Practical Nursing diploma. Four scholarships of $3,000 were awarded to CarolinaEast Health System nurses pursuing an advanced degree in nursing to Jenna Boyd, Brianna Brinson, Alexandria Kirian, and April Tripp. Additional information about the Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship can be found online at the CarolinaEast Foundation’s website.
