Emmys 2019: Springsteen on Broadway Wins Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special

Bruce Springsteen’s newest Netflix special, Springsteen on Broadway, took home a Creative Arts Emmy today. The film, which won for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, beat out Beyoncé’s Homecoming, “Carpool Karaoke,” and more. The special was directed Thom Zimny, who previously filmed documentaries for Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and The River.

Springsteen himself did not win an Emmy for Springsteen on Broadway—something he would’ve accomplished had the special won Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). That award went to the Paul McCartney episode of “Carpool Karaoke.” Had Springsteen won the award, he would have achieved EGOT status (having previously won a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony).

Springsteen on Broadway chronicles the Boss’ intimate one-man show of the same name. Springsteen also released a companion album for his Broadway show last year.
