Emmys 2020: Zendaya, Jennifer Aniston, Tyler Perry, and More Broadcast From Home

Not much about 2020 has been very “normal” thus far, but the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards tried to bring a semblance of familiarity to TV fans on Sunday, September 20. The show was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, though he was largely alone onstage—with the exception of Jennifer Aniston, who made a cameo to help present at one point before rushing home in anticipation of her own nomination. (She ultimately lost to Zendaya for Best Lead Actress in a Drama.) Despite beaming in from their homes, however, most celebrities opted to make a night of it, dressing up or getting their makeup done to take part in the innovative ceremony. As a result, fans got to peek inside their favorite A-list stars’ homes. Here, we’ve rounded up some of the most memorable backdrops from TV’s biggest night.

Jennifer Aniston pulled double duty, helping Kimmel present an award early on and then appearing—in a different outfit—alongside her Friends costars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow at her Bel Air house. They set up camp in front of what appeared to be built-in bookshelves in her home office. Earlier in the day, she shared a glimpse into her Emmys prep with a moisturizing mask applied to her face and a champagne flute in hand.

Zendaya

With her win, Zendaya became the youngest woman to take home the Best Lead Actress in a Drama prize.

It was a full-on family affair for Zendaya as she and her team waited with bated breath to find out whether she’d won the Best Lead Actress in a Drama category—and she did. The 24-year-old and her crew appeared to be celebrating in a neutral-colored living room with round stone center tables—possibly at the Euphoria star’s new $4 million San Fernando Valley estate, which she purchased earlier this year.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh was nominated for her role in Killing Eve.

Though she donned makeup and got her hair done for the Emmys this year, Oh opted to skip the gown for her at-home appearance, instead wearing a royal purple silk top for the occasion. The actress, who took home the Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama, Golden Globe award last year for her starring role in Killing Eve, was nominated in the Best Lead Actress in a Drama category Sunday night, but ultimately lost. Her setup, however, was a big win: She sat before a wall of bookshelves in a black director’s chair.

Tyler Perry

Upon accepting his Governors Award at the Emmys Sunday night, Tyler Perry made a memorable speech about his grandmother’s quilt that touched upon heritage, inclusivity, and the value of every story. Prior to the show, he showed off his dapper black-on-black tuxedo getup, posing in the library at his Atlanta home, the same one where he previously posed with President Obama in 2015.

Laura Linney showed off an eye-catching, if unusual, outfit for awards night: a black Christian Siriano suit with the word VOTE printed all over it. During the telecast, she and her husband, Marc Schauer, sat perched on a beige velour couch with a collection of throw pillows. A number of wood-framed landscape drawings lined the wall behind them, providing an elegant backdrop.

Julia Garner

True to her Ozark character Ruth Langmore, Julia Garner didn’t hold back when it came to celebrating the Emmys at home with her musician husband, singer Mark Foster. The actress donned a cream-colored Chanel gown paired with a dizzying number of pearl necklaces for a full-on 1920s flapper look, and posted up in front of the couple’s elegant French windows with a bouquet of white flowers right behind her. The couple, who live in the San Fernando Valley, were married last year.

Dan Levy

The Schitt’s Creek gang must have known that big wins were on the horizon, because the cast and crew got together to celebrate (all in masks, of course) at a beautifully decorated, but as yet unnamed venue in Toronto. Daniel Levy, who took home three wins—for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, for Writing in a Comedy Series, and for Directing in a Comedy Series—excitedly accepted the awards in a gray skirt suit similar to the one he wore for the series finale. The venue included a large flower wall, centerpieces on every socially distant table, and open doors for extra ventilation.

Kenan Thompson

As a current cast member on Saturday Night Live, Kenan Thompson is no stranger to broadcasting live from his home in Tampa. On Sunday, he unwittingly showed off some of his house’s eclectic wall art, including two bright yellow sun-shaped sculptures and what appeared to be a fiddle in one corner of the room. Several small potted plants lined the windowsill behind him. At another point during the day, he angled his camera so a set of stairs and a cozy couch could be seen behind him.

Mahershala Ali

Though he’s won two Oscars, Mahershala Ali walked home from the Emmys empty-handed for the second time this year.

One of the sleekest backdrops of the evening was that of Mahershala Ali, who joined the awards ceremony from what was presumably his contemporary home in northeast L.A., which he purchased in 2018. Ali looked cozy resting back on bright teal-colored cushions atop a gray wooden bench set in front of a glass window; images of his house show a similar clean-lined glass aesthetic.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Just because there wasn’t an official red carpet to sashay down didn’t mean Tracee Ellis Ross was willing to miss her moment to shine. The Black-ish star donned a stunning, tiered gold Alexandre Vauthier gown for the virtual ceremony and even wore a matching gold face mask. She shared photos and videos of herself making her way down her own red carpet in the backyard of her Los Angeles home, and later even joined Kimmel in the studio to present an award.

Orange Is the New Black alumnus Uzo Aduba appeared on the show in a black T-shirt with Breonna Taylor’s name emblazoned across the front and a dazzling gold skirt. Her setup was simple and straightforward, in front of a bookshelf full of books and dolls and toys—and now, the actress can add another Emmy to her collection after winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her starring role in Mrs. America.
