As you probably know, Seth Rogen had a few things to say during this year's Emmys when it came to the event's COVID-19 safety protocol.

"What are we doing? They said this was outdoors. It is not. They lied to us!" he said in his monologue. "We're in a hermetically sealed tent right now. I would not have come to this. Why is there a roof?"

Well, two of the people responsible for putting on the show — telecast producers Ian Stewart and Reginald Hudlin — gave an interview to Variety where they made clear that his remarks were unplanned and not very welcome.

"I just felt it was an unfortunate misdirect from him," Stewart said. "Because it wasn’t just our decision. This is the health authorities’ decision as well, to say that it’s a completely safe environment if you do all those things.”

Stewart also claimed that Rogen's remarks deviated from what he'd rehearsed, and that he was aware of the safety precautions that were being taken: “We’ve worked with all the health authorities. We were signed off by LA County, we came up with a plan with them. Those tables were distanced. Everyone was vaccinated. Everyone was negative tested in that audience... So he knew exactly what it was."

“It made three months of very hard work and many, many discussions to get it absolutely right feel a little bit wasted, really,” Stewart continued, pointing out that he'd done 50 productions during the pandemic without anyone getting sick. “We work in this industry, we’re desperately aware of COVID... So, it’s deeply frustrating.”
