Six-time Olympic luge champion Natalie Geisenberger bid farewell on Sunday on the sidelines of the World Championships in Altenberg.

Her team-mates donned Geisenberger masks for the ceremony. A film showing the highlights of the German's sporting career was shown beforehand.

"The film was incredibly emotional. It was nice to see so many old images, even if they almost made me a little uncomfortable," said the 35-year-old. "It was nice to say goodbye in front of such a backdrop".

She announced the end of her career in September.

At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Geisenberger won her third consecutive Olympic individual gold as well as gold in the team relay. She thus overtook Claudia Pechstein as the most successful German Winter Olympian.

The Bavarian has won a total of nine World Championship titles and the overall World Cup eight times.

To mark her departure, the German luge team won gold in the team relay ahead of the US and Latvia. It was the 97th World Championship medal for Germany Norbert Loch, who will retire as head coach at the end of the season.
