Employee suffers smoke inhalation during Wednesday fire at Masonite Architectural in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD − A Wednesday morning fire caused significant damage to a large press and the roof of a business and caused one employee to suffer smoke inhalation.

At 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, the Marshfield Fire Department responded to a fire at Masonite Architectural, 1401 E. Fourth St., Marshfield. The fire was in the particle board plant located at the business. A large particle board press was on fire. The fire sprinkler system was activated, containing the fire to the area it started in, according to a news release from the Marshfield Fire Department.

A team was able to make entry and put out the press fire, but fire was found in the ductwork above the press and in the attic space the ductwork goes through, according to the release. A ladder truck was used to access the roof of the building because of the difficulty in accessing the attic areas. Firefighters used access hatches and made holes in the roof to extinguish the fires with the use of hand lines and an integrated fire suppression system in the ductwork, according to the release.

Firefighters had to cut and remove three of the boards in order to fully extinguish the fire. A total of 14 firefighters and three Central Wisconsin Rapid Intervention Team members from Vesper responded to the fire. Marshfield firefighters were on the scene for more than six hours.

One Masonite employee was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, according to the release. The large press has significant fire damage, and the roof of the building was damaged to gain access to the fire. There is minor damage to adjacent machinery, according to the release. A large amount of water from the sprinkler system and attack lines remained in the building.
