EMU official, 62, accused of touching himself while driving naked in Dearborn
Dearborn police arrested an Eastern Michigan University official this week on charges that he exposed himself while operating a vehicle.
Police say Michael Tew, 62, was seen driving naked while touching himself on Sept. 2, according to a police news release. A "concerned driver" recorded it on his cellphone and sent it to police.
“This sort of conduct is illegal and will not be tolerated in Dearborn. I’d like to commend the concerned citizen for documenting the incident and bringing it to our attention,” said Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin.
Tew, EMU's associate provost and associate vice president for academic programming and strategy, was arrested Wednesday at his Dearborn home.
EMU suspended Tew indefinitely after learning about the incident, pending the results of the investigation and legal proceedings, according to spokesperson Walter Kraft. While suspended, Tew is not permitted to go to EMU's campus.
"We are troubled and concerned about this reported incident," Kraft said. "The individual involved has been a faculty member and administrator at the University since 1989. ... We are not aware of any inappropriate conduct or actions of this nature related to their work on campus."
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Tew with one misdemeanor count of aggravated indecent exposure and one felony count of indecent exposure with sexually delinquent person notice.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Sept. 23, with a preliminary examination set for Sept. 30.
