Encore Casino Furloughs 3K As It Looks Toward July Opening

EVERETT, MA —Encore Boston Harbor will reopen during Phase 3 of the state's reopening plan, which is expected to begin no sooner than July 6. The resort and casino voluntarily closed March 15 to help curb the spread of the coronavirus and has remained shuttered under state regulations.

After furloughing about 10 percent of its full-time workforce at the start of June, the casino plans to furlough another 3,000 workers, head of Public Affairs Eric Kraus told The Boston Globe.

Casino officials said Monday they expect to reopen the gaming area and food and beverage outlets around the casino. The hotel will operate on a limited basis. Some employees working in the reopened amenities and restaurants will return to work, while those who work in areas for which a reopening date is uncertain will be furloughed.

In addition to its health and safety plan, Encore will adhere to directives set forth by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, including reducing available gaming capacity. The resort will reopen with amenities tailored to the new rules and in support of the anticipated number of guests.
