The end of a streak

The MIAA updated the tournament power rankings on Friday.

In boys lacrosse, Hingham (No. 2) and BC High (No. 3) are right at the top of Division 1 and Norwell (No. 2) and Hanover (No. 3) are there in Div. 3. Duxbury is the No. 2 seed in Div. 2 while Cohasset is there in Div. 4.

Notre Dame Academy is the top seed in Div. 2 in the girls lacrosse rankings. Duxbury is No. 3 in Div. 2 also.

In baseball, Milton is the top dog, or should I say top cat, in Div. 2. In softball, Holbrook is the highest local coming in at No. 3 in Div. 5. Archbishop Williams (No. 4) and Abington are neck and neck in Div. 5.

Stat of the week

When the Middleboro High boys track and field team knocked off East Bridgewater, it meant a lot.

For one, the Sachems improved to 4-0 and picked up a win over the always-tough Vikings. In fact, Middleboro was the first South Shore League team to defeat the Vikings since 2007. The loss snapped a 96-meet winning streak for EB, which last lost a dual-meet in 2009.

The Vikings are coached by the legendary George McCabe, who was inducted into the MSTCA Hall of Fame in 2004. McCabe even coached Middleboro coach TJ Smith. Smith even won a state title as a cross-country runner in 2001 at EB.

“I told (McCabe) my goal as coach is to help get Middleboro as close to the kind of program as they have and the reputation they have," said Smith. "That’s been the focus for us – to try to be what they are.”

Most-read story of the week

Our top story last week was Eric McHugh's profile of North Quincy High senior Kiera Sleiman. The track star, who owns two school records, signed her letter of acceptance to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There, she'll compete in track and field and hopes to study medicine.

It's clear this Raider is making her city proud, as plenty of people were in attendance for her signing ceremony including Quincy mayor Thomas Koch.

"As I told her, 'There are not many people that I would say I could see (succeeding) at Navy or Army, but you will. You're probably nervous to go, but you are going to go in there and people's heads are going to turn because of who you are and how you carry yourself,'" NQ volleyball coach Caitlin Plaskasovitis said.
