As end of winter nears, Newport Art Museum offers exciting programs and exhibitions

Newport Art Museum's Winter Speaker Series is set to end on a high note on Feb. 25 with a sold-out event featuring Katherine Quinn's talk on "The Creative Genius of Anthony Quinn." For those who missed out, virtual tickets are still available on the museum's website. The event will take place from 2-4 p.m.

In honor of Black History Month, the museum is co-hosting a celebration on Feb. 26 at Newport Art House's space in Innovate Newport. Attendees can enjoy art, live music, interactive art-making, delicious food, and more.

On March 11, the museum will be celebrating Youth Month with a "Wake + Create" event that focuses on the playful works of Susan M. Matthews in the Museum School's mini-exhibition. Children aged 4-10 and their caregivers can experiment with mixed media art-making in the studio.

The works of Anthony Quinn will be the topic of the final installment of the Newport Art Museum's Winter Speaker Series.

The Museum School will be starting a new session of art classes on Feb. 27. With over a dozen classes ranging from wheel throwing and sculpting in clay, collage, drawing, pastels, printmaking, and more, there is something for every age and interest. Classes are filling up fast, so interested participants should register on the website to secure a spot. Winter Clay Camp, which begins on Monday for children aged 6-12, still has a few available spots for those looking for a last-minute creative outlet for their child during school break.

In addition to these programs, Newport Art Museum is hosting a number of exciting exhibitions. Social Fabric: Textiles & Contemporary Issues, which runs until June 11, 2023, features a diverse array of contemporary textile artists who are weavers, sculptors, quiltmakers, and visionaries examining the complex issues of our time. The exhibition explores topics such as incarceration, queerness, the environment, labor, migration, identity, and home.

The Joseph Norman: Works from the Permanent Collection exhibition showcases a selection of Norman's prints and paintings from the Museum's permanent collection. Norman, whose career as a printmaker and painter spans over forty years, is considered by many art historians to be the most important African American lithographer of his generation.
