Rosamund Pike is back in all of her Gone Girl-esque glory in new film, I Care A Lot. The movie, which also stars Eiza Gonzales, just dropped on Amazon Prime, and has got the internet talking about everything from the ending to whether it's based on a true story. Here's what you need to know.

*Spoilers*

Is I Care A Lot based on a true story?

The plot follows Marla Grayson, a shady female whose business involves taking legal guardianship of vulnerable older people and gaining financial control of all their assets. When she targets OAP Jennifer Peterson (played by Dianne West) who has powerful gangster ties (played by Peter Drinklage) unknown to Marla, a game of intense cat and mouse ensues.

And in short, no, it didn't happen in real life. But director J Blakeson previously revealed to Collider that inspiration for Marla came from similar situations that do play out every day. "It’s true to life in the fact that there are lots of these predatory guardians who do pray on vulnerable and elderly people, and sort of entrap them in these guardianships and basically sort of strip their life apart," he explained.

"The true life stories of it are really quite harrowing and horrifying so unfortunately, yeah, it does happen."

Blakeson said he went down a "Google rabbit hole" in researching the film. "I was horrified. Imagine opening your door one day and there is a person standing there holding a piece of paper that gives them total legal power over you. This provided a lot of themes that interested me, like ambition, the American Dream, and humans becoming commodities. So the story started there. I sat and wrote it on my own and very quickly it formed into what is now I Care a Lot."

After Roman Lunyov's attempt to kill Marla fails, she gets her own back by kidnapping him and leaving him stranded in the middle of a road. When he comes around in a hospital bed, she reveals herself as his new legal guardian, with control over all of his assets.

In order to regain his assets, Marla demands $10million dollars.

Instead, Roman offers a counter suggestion: the pair partner up to build a global nursing home business, with Marla as the face and Roman behind the scenes, making them both filthy rich.

The plan initially succeeds: both Roman and his mother regain control of their assets and are no longer under legal guardianship, while Marla and Roman become billionaires. But it's not all fun and games: the end of the movie sees Marla shot in the chest by a man who hasn't been able to see his mother due to the guardianship, who died in one of Marla's care homes.

Speaking to USA Today, Rosamund Pike commented, "In my head, Marla never believed she was going to die. I mean, right until the point that she breathes her last, I think she still thinks she's going to win and she's going to get out of it. I really do."
