Enfield Graduating Class of 2020 Totals 360 Seniors
ENFIELD, CT — The 360 graduating members of the Enfield High School Class of 2020 have the unique distinction of two catastrophic world events bookending their lives. Most were born in the year following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, and their senior year was marred by a complete change of approaches to everyday life amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Having lost out on nearly half of their final scholastic year, and the celebrated events which go along with it - senior prom, winter tournaments, spring sports, plays, concerts, parades and class trips - the class members persevered, culminating in a unique graduation ceremony, the first of its kind in Enfield history.
Due to government restrictions brought on by the pandemic, the traditional graduation ceremony in Carl S. Angelica Memorial Stadium, which would have been the first on the newly-christened Cookie Bromage Field, was instead presented as a "virtual ceremony," with graduates and their loved ones watching from their homes on the local cable access channel.
On Monday and Tuesday, seniors donned their caps and gowns and, one by one, strolled down the sidewalk in front of the auditorium wing to a stage, where they were presented a simulated diploma, posed for a professional photo, and received gifts from the Safe Grad committee. They then returned to their vehicles and drove to a photo area in front of the Enrico Fermi STEAM wing, where they happily posed for pictures with delighted family members.
Video clips of the graduates were compiled with other elements, including a few speeches from school officials and addresses by class president Angelina Delgado, salutatorian Arvind Kasiliya and valedictorian Sean Suleski.
