Cardinals lose Kyler Murray to injury in Monday Night Football loss to Patriots

The Arizona Cardinals' rough season just got rougher.

Arizona fell to 4-9 on the year with a 27-13 NFL Week 14 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football at State Farm Stadium, but the team also lost quarterback Kyler Murray to an injury on the third play of the game.

Murray left the game with a non-contact knee injury after running for a 3-yard gain.

He is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, but left the field on a cart with a towel over his head, clearly dejected.

Colt McCoy went 27-for-40 passing for 246 yards and an interception in relief of Murray.

Arizona led 13-7 near the end of the first half, but Nick Folk hit a 51-yard field goal to make it 13-10 as the first half ended and the Patriots outscored the Cardinals 17-0 in the second half.

They took a 20-13 lead in the third quarter on a 23-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Raekwon McMillan after Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins fumbled the ball while carelessly running with it with just one hand, failing to secure it.

The Patriots turned on the pressure on McCoy in the second half, ending up with six total sacks and a lot of QB pressures.

The Cardinals were 1-for-5 on fourth downs in the game.

New England outgained Arizona in the game, 328-323.

Mac Jones went 24-for-35 passing for the Patriots, throwing one interception.

Pierre Strong had 70 yards on just five carries, adding a touchdown for New England, who also got a rushing touchdown from rookie Kevin Harris.

James Conner had 85 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Cardinals.

Hopkins led all receivers in the game with seven catches for 79 yards.

The Cardinals play the Broncos in Denver next Sunday.

The Patriots, who improved to 7-6 with the win, play at the Raiders in NFL Week 15.

Arizona turns ball over again on downs, Patriots run out clock

This game is over.

The Cardinals' defense forced another Patriots' punt, but the offense turned the ball over on downs for the fourth time in the game after a 6-play, 17-yard drive.

Colt McCoy was sacked six times on the night, and he was pressured a lot more.

The Patriots ran out the clock for the 27-13 win.

Cardinals turn ball over on downs again

The Arizona Cardinals are 1-for-4 on fourth downs in the game after turning the ball over on downs on their most recent possession.

Arizona's drive took 10 plays and went for just 21 yards. It took 4:53 off the clock.

The Patriots' defense hasn't been giving Colt McCoy much time as they have ramped up the pressure on the Cardinals' QB. He was sacked on 4th & 13 on Arizona's most recent 4th-down attempt.

Cardinals force three-and-out

The Cardinals' defense is attempting to give itself a chance.

The unit just forced a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense.

Arizona needed to get something going on its next possession to get back into the game.

It couldn't.

The Cardinals went 3-and-out to give the Patriots the ball back with 12:33 left in the game.

Patriots extend lead vs. Cardinals

The Cardinals are in trouble.

New England took advantage of Colt McCoy's interception by going 63 yards in five plays to take a 27-13 lead with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter.

Pierre Strong rushed the ball in from three yards for the score, which was set up by a 39-yard catch by Hunter Henry.

Cardinals turn ball back over to Patriots

The Cardinals' Colt McCoy was hit on a pass on Arizona's next possession, and that pass ended up being intercepted for another Cardinals turnover and ending another scoring chance for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have had two costly turnovers this half.

McCoy is now 20-for-29 for 197 yards, with the one interception.

Cardinals' offense doesn't help defense as Patriots return fumble for touchdown

First, the good news: Arizona's defense forced the Patriots to a three-and-out, giving the Cardinals the ball back at their own 6-yard line.

Now, the bad: On the second play of the Cardinals' drive, DeAndre Hopkins fumbled the ball after a 4-yard catch, and Raekwon McMillan ran it back 23 yards for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 20-13 lead.

Hopkins was careless with the football, holding it with just one hand. McMillan ran untouched into the end zone after the fumble recovery.

Cardinals fail to convert another fourth-down play

The Cardinals went for it on 4th and 5 at the New England 40-yard line on their first possession of the second half, but Colt McCoy and Marquise Brown couldn't connect on a pass, giving the Patriots the ball back.

Arizona gained 35 yards on the drive, with 23 of it coming on a pass from McCoy to DeAndre Hopkins.

Patriots tie game vs. Cardinals with field goal

The Patriots' Nick Folk hit a 23-yard field goal to tie the game against the Cardinals on the first possession of the second half.

Pierre Strong set up the field goal with a 44-yard run. Strong also had a 16-yard reception on the drive.

The drive took eight plays and went for 71 yards.

Patriots vs. Cardinals: First-half stats

The Cardinals lead the Patriots at the half in Glendale on Monday Night Football, 13-10.

Arizona outgained New England in the first half, 197-151 and had a 133-113 advantage in passing yardage and a 64-38 lead in rushing yards.

The Cardinals had a 17:52 to 12:08 lead in time of possession.

Colt McCoy went 14-for-20 for 129 yards for Arizona. Mac Jones was 14-for-21 for 123 yards, with an interception.

The Cardinals' Kyler Murray exited the game after just throwing one pass.

Kevin Harris led the Patriots with a rushing touchdown and 28 yards on five carries. James Conner led the Cardinals with a touchdown on the ground and 58 yards on nine carries.

The Cardinals' Robbie Anderson had three catches for 44 yards. He only had two catches for the Cardinals entering the game.

The Patriots will receive the kickoff to open the second half.

Cardinals can't capitalize on great field position, Patriots get late field goal

The Cardinals went for it on 4th & 1 at the New England 32-yard line on their next possession, but Colt McCoy's pass was tipped and broken up, ending a chance for Arizona to add to its lead.

The Patriots then were able to pull within 13-10 after a 51-yard field goal by Nick Folk at the end of the half ended a 6-play, 35-yard drive for New England that only took 32 seconds.

Cardinals' defense steps up again vs. Patriots

The Cardinals' defense just forced a three-and-out by the Patriots, sacking Mac Jones for a loss of 10 yards on 3rd and 11.

Arizona will have the ball at the New England 41-yard line with 1:42 left in the half after a 17-yard punt return by Greg Dortch.

Cardinals regain lead on James Conner run

The Arizona Cardinals have regained the lead after a 10-yard run from James Conner, who was able to stretch out for the touchdown.

The run capped a 7-play 63-yard drive.

Wide receiver Robbie Anderson had a couple of key catches on the drive and has three catches in the game (he only had two catches for the Cardinals coming into the game).

Arizona forces New England to punt

The Cardinals forced the Patriots to punt after New England gained just 10 yards over six plays on its next possession, giving Arizona the ball back at its own 36-yard line.

Rhamandre Stevenson returned to the game for the Patriots.

Patriots WR DeVante Parker (head) and CB Jack Jones (knee) both have been downgraded to out, joining the Cardinals' Kyler Murray.

Cardinals get another field goal vs. Patriots

The Cardinals had another drive stall in Patriots' territory and were forced to kick a 32-yard field goal, which Matt Prater made, to pull Arizona within 7-6.

Arizona's drive went for six plays and 56 yards.

The Cardinals' drive was aided by a 39-yard pass interference penalty on the Patriots.

Injuries piling up in Cardinals vs. Patriots game

Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner was injured after a 4-yard run on the Cardinals' first play of their next possession. Conner was forced out of bounds by a trio of Patriots' defenders and stayed down on the ground on the sideline.

Arizona defensive back Marco Wilson left the game on the Patriots' previous possession and quarterback Kyler Murray exited after Arizona's third play of the game.

The Patriots are also dealing with injuries to several players, including CB Jack Jones, DeVante Parker (head) and RB Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle).

Update: Conner returned to the game a couple of plays later.

Patriots take lead vs. Cardinals

New England Patriots rookie Kevin Harris rushed for a 14-yard touchdown to give his team a 7-3 lead on the Cardinals.

The run concluded an 8-play, 75-yard drive for the Patriots. Harris also had two 9-yard runs on the drive. A face mask penalty on the Cardinals' aided New England on the possession.

It was the first red zone touchdown for New England since Week 9.

Cardinals get on scoreboard first vs. Patriots

Matt Prater made a 33-yard field goal to cap a 7-play, 20-yard drive and give Arizona a 3-0 lead on New England early in the second quarter.

Prater missed a 50-yard field goal earlier in the game.

Arizona had great field position after intercepting the Patriots' Mac Jones, but wasn't able to get into the end zone.

Kyler Murray downgraded to out vs. Patriots

Arizona Cardinals' QB Kyler Murray, who left the game against the New England Patriots after just the third play from scrimmage, has been downgraded to out.

He was originally listed as questionable to return with a knee injury.

Murray left the game on a cart.

The Monday Night Football game is scoreless after the first quarter.

Patriots WR DeVante Parker (head) and RB Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) are questionable to return.

Cardinals get first turnover of the game

Arizona's Isaiah Simmons intercepted a tipped Mac Jones' pass on New England's second possession to give the Cardinal the ball back at the Patriots' 36 yard line.

The Patriots' drive had gone for 32 yards and six plays.

Cardinals punt on second possession of the game

The Cardinals' second drive of the game went for 5 plays and 37 yards.

An illegal shift penalty on Marquise Brown negated a 15-yard gain on a catch by DeAndre Hopkins from Colt McCoy and stalled the drive.

Patriots punt after after four plays vs. Cardinals

The Patriots had to punt after four plays against the Cardinals on their first drive of the game.

DeVante Parker had a 14-yard reception on New England's first play, but the Patriots' drive stalled after that.

Cardinals come up empty on first drive vs. Patriots

Matt Prater missed a 50-yard field goal on 4th & 7 at the Patriots' 31-yard line as the Cardinals came up empty on their first drive.

Arizona gained 43 yards on the 9-play drive.

Kyler Murray's status hangs over the team right now.

According to the Cardinals, Murray's return is questionable with a knee injury.

Kyler Murray goes down on first drive vs. Patriots

The Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray was down on the field after running for three yards on a play against the New England Patriots on Arizona's first drive on Monday night.

Murray landed awkwardly at the end of the play, a play in which he wasn't touched. It was Arizona's third play of the game.

Murray then left the game on a cart, appearing to hurt his ankle on the play. He was consoled by players from both teams.

Colt McCoy came in to relieve Murray. Third-string QB Trace McSorley is not active for the Cardinals for the game.

ESPN reported that Murray had a towel over his head near the locker room and that the QB was "sobbing."

WR Jakobi Meyers and RB Damien Harris are among the inactives for the Patriots.
