England vs Ireland LIVE: Test cricket score and updates as Josh Tongue picks up three wickets on dominant day

England cricket team hit the deck running in their first test of the summer with a brilliant performance on the opening day of their four-day test match against Ireland cricket.

Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl giving Stuart Broad the chance to utilise the helpful overhead conditions in the morning. Leading the attack Broad reduced the visitors to 19-3 before Jack Leach had the dangerous Paul Stirling caught behind for 30. James McCollum (36) and Curtis Campher (33) attempted to dig in for the visitors but England’s attack was potent with Broad finishing with 5-51 as Ireland were dismissed for just 172.

Despite only batting for an hour and 50 minutes England’s response was domineering. The opening pair of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley took Ireland’s less experienced bowlers to the sword and notched up a 100 partnership before Crawley (56) chipped a drive back to Fionn Hand who claimed his maiden test wicket. Ben Duckett (60*) and Ollie Pope (29*) saw England safely through to the close with the overnight deficit just 20 runs.

England will now look to extend their lead through Day 2. They will no doubt score runs at a quick rate and with a batting line-up looking for form ahead of the Ashes it could be a long day in the field for Ireland if they do not take early wickets.

Follow the action from Day 2 at Lord’s as England take on Ireland:

STUMPS: Ireland 97-3, Tector 33, Tucker 21, Leach 0-25 (6), trail by 255

18:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

The Irish batters take advantage of an aggressive field in the final over to put on a few more runs before stumps, and Ireland end the day 255 runs behind. They will almost certainly lose this Test match tomorrow but there has at least been some solid resistance this evening.

Ireland 92-3, Tector 30, Tucker 19, Broad 0-18 (5), trail by 260

18:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

Broad is back with ball in hand and appeals heartily for an edge off the glove of Harry Tector trying to fend a short delivery. There was a noise but the umpire is unmoved. UltraEdge shows it was off the shirt, not the glove, and Tector survives. Tucker unleashes a ferocious hook for four off the final ball of the over.

Just time for one more over.

Ireland 85-3, Tector 27, Tucker 15, Leach 0-19 (6), trail by 267

18:26 , Lawrence Ostlere

A good probing over from Leach, who is denied a maiden by Tector’s scrambled single off the last to retain the strike.

Ireland 84-3, Tector 26, Tucker 15, Broad 0-11 (4), trail by 268

18:24 , Lawrence Ostlere

Broad’s biggest problem is the crease, as he gives a couple of extras away via no balls. Tucker pinches a couple of singles too.

Ireland 79-3, Tector 25, Tucker 13, Leach 0-18 (5), trail by 273

18:16 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tector pinches a couple of singles down to long leg from what is surely Tongue’s final over the day, having bowled eight, and Leach then puts in a maiden. Stuart Broad will take up the ball for these final 15 minutes.

Ireland 77-3, Tector 23, Tucker 13, Leach 0-18 (4), trail by 275

18:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jack Leach keeps a tight control on his length apart from one ball in the middle of the over which is too full, and Tucker slaps it away through midwicket for a boundary.

Ireland 73-3, Tector 23, Tucker 9, Tongue 3-25 (7), trail by 279

18:04 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lorcan Tucker is the man in next and he is quickly grounded by a bouncer which hits him flush on the helmet. After a check-up and a change of lid, he continues, and Ireland continue to play some expansive cricket as the evening draws in.

Wicket! Stirling feathers behind off Tongue, Ireland 63-3

17:49 , Lawrence Ostlere

Paul Stirling gets tied up by a short ball veering down leg, and Tongue and Bairstow both celebrate passionately, convinced he edged behind. The umpire isn’t moved, but UltraEdge confirms the faintest of touches off the glove and Stirling walks.

Ireland 58-2, Tector 19, Stirling 14, Tongue 2-23 (5), trail by 305

17:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tector is taking on Josh Tongue – first he whips through midwicket for four before pulling a short one for six! Ireland are going down with a fight.

Ireland 48-2, Tector 9, Stirling 14, Leach 0-1 (1), trail by 304

17:36 , Lawrence Ostlere

Into the attack comes Jack Leach after Matthew Potts took a bit of a pounding in his last over. Tector is tentative against Leach’s spin at first but finishes the over with a quickly run single.

Ireland 47-2, Tector 8, Stirling 14, Tongue 2-13 (4), trail by 305

17:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

Another wonderfully driven boundary by Stirling, who looks in the mood, crashing the ball through cover for four more. He adds a single and the over finishes with a flick off Tector’s hips for a single down at long leg to retain the strike.

Ireland 40-2, Tector 6, Stirling 9, Potts 0-28 (6), trail by 312

17:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

A beautifully poised pair of boundaries by Paul Stirling, the first driven through cover and the second more square on the off-side, from his back foot. That’s lovely, and Ireland are getting into a bit of a groove here. Nice to see.

Ireland 32-2, Tector 6, Stirling 1, Tongue 2-6 (3), trail by 320

17:22 , Lawrence Ostlere

A boundary from Tector, who clips accurately past leg gully, amid five dot balls.

Ireland 28-2, Tector 2, Stirling 1, Potts 0-20 (5), trail by 324

17:18 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tector pushes a single through mid-on, before Stirling offers a little nudge to the on-side to get off the mark. Tector ends the over with a single off his pads, then complains to Potts about his wristband shining too brightly and blinding him. Potts offers him a shrug.

Ireland 25-2, Tector 0, Stirling 0, Tongue 2-2 (2), trail by 327

17:13 , Lawrence Ostlere

Stirling survives the final ball of the over, and that’s a maiden.

Paul Stirling takes James McCollum’s place at the crease

17:11 , Lawrence Ostlere

It is his right ankle, in fact, that appears to be hurt. After receiving a little bit of treatment on the wicket, McCollum is helped off the pitch by two of Ireland’s medical team. A freak injury, and that is surely the last we will see of the batter this innings. Paul Stirling comes to the crease with Ireland 25-2 (effectively for three), and one more ball of Tongue’s over to come.

James McCollum injured

17:08 , Lawrence Ostlere

This looks awkward – James McCollum tried to avoid a short ball from Josh Tongue but did himself some damage, possibly on his left ankle or knee, while twisting away. He lets out a shriek and goes to ground in a lot of pain, and the England players look concerned.

Ireland 25-2, McCollom 12, Tector 0, Potts 0-17 (4), trail by 327

17:01 , Sonia Twigg

These are nervy moments for Ireland, but they manage to see out Potts’ fourth over without losing another wicket.

Tector took a long time to set himself for his first ball, kicking the dust away for the final ball of the over, before playing and missing at one just outside the off stump.

Ireland 18-2, McCollom 5, Tector 0, Tongue 2-2 (1), trail by 334

16:58 , Sonia Twigg

Tongue struck twice in his first over as Ireland look to cling on, there’s around an hour and a half of play left if England push to wrap this up tonight!

Wicket! Balbirnie caught behind, Ireland 18-2

16:56 , Sonia Twigg

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie was off the mark straight away after his first-innings duck, but fell in the same over as his teammate, with Tongue claiming a second wicket.

Balbirnie just edged the ball behind to a diving Jonny Bairstow who made no mistakes with the catch.

Josh Tongue claims his first Test wicket. Ireland 16-1 Moor out!

16:51 , Sonia Twigg

Tongue claimed his first Test wicket, when he trapped Moor lbw, the batter elected to review the decision, but DRS upheld the decision.

After bowling mostly short in the first innings it will be a big occasion for the young seamer, who has been highly rated by England ahead of the Test.

Ireland 16-0, Moor 11, McCollom 5, Potts 0-10 (3), trail by 336

16:50 , Sonia Twigg

McCollom played a lovely cover drive to move on to 5, as Ireland have got through the first few overs here with little concern.

Ireland 12-0, Moor 11, McCollom 1, Broad 0-6 (3), trail by 340

16:45 , Sonia Twigg

Moor has taken a leaf out of England’s book there with a guide into the gap to the cover boundary off Broad’s third over.

The rest of the over is fairly comfortably seen out here, with the pitch looking a lot less lively than when Ireland batted in the first innings.

Ireland 8-0, Moor 7, McCollom 1, Potts 0-6 (2), trail by 344

16:40 , Sonia Twigg

Potts just beats the outside edge as McCollom prods forward, there looks like there’s just a hint of movement which will be encouraging for England.

There’s a big appeal from Potts after one strikes the pads, but Ben Stokes decided not to appeal.

Moor sees out the rest of the Potts over fairly comfortably.

Ireland 8-0, Moor 7, McCollom 1, Broad 0-2 (2), trail by 344

16:36 , Sonia Twigg

There’s a short midwicket in, as England are in the hunt for wickets, and Ireland just trying to survive.

Ireland 6-0, Moor 5, McCollom 1, Potts 0-6 (1), trail by 346

16:31 , Sonia Twigg

Matthew Potts with the new ball from the Nursery End, McCollom and Ireland claim their first run with a steer down to fine leg.

There’s an appeal with Potts’ second ball, but no review and the bowler heads back to his mark.

England’s pressure for wickets has seen Ben Stokes give away four overthrows with an attempt at the non-strikers end.

Moor off the mark with a very-pleasing 5 runs.

Ireland 0-0, Moor 0, McCollom 0, Broad 0-0 (1), trail by 352

16:27 , Sonia Twigg

England have come out to bowl, the first ball from Stuart Broad was down the leg side.

The second was defended by Peter Moor and the over was played out for a maiden.

ENGLAND DECLARE

16:13 , Sonia Twigg

Ben Stokes decided not to have a bat with the wicket of Pope and declared with a lead of 352.

200 and WICKET: Ollie Pope hits 200 and is stumped next ball

16:12 , Sonia Twigg

Pope has done it! His first ever Test double century - and it’s the fastest by anyone in England.

What a way to bring it up as well with a six down the ground.

Pope did not hang around and was stumped immediately next ball.

England 517-3, Pope 199, Brook 8, Adair 0-127 (20)

16:09 , Sonia Twigg

Harry Brook has come out, and smashed one straight into his own leg trying to access the leg side with only his fifth delivery.

There are no mistakes from the next ball however, as Adair is dispatched for four, and the man has almost immediately gone out to the boundary that side.

The next ball is plinked over the infield and into the off-side this time.

WICKET: England 508-3, Root out for 56, lead by 336

16:04 , Sonia Twigg

Joe Root has gone! Just as it looked like Ireland could have to wait until a declaration, and Root was bowled by the spin of McBrine for 56.

There has been some chat comparing today to the first day at Rawalpindi in December, when England scored 500 in a day, and Root didn’t get a century on that occasion either.

TEA: England 503-2, lead by 331

15:48 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope scored over 100 runs on his own in the afternoon session as, first with Ben Duckett then with Joe Root, he helped England take their lead over 300.

Pope is three runs away from a double-century and no doubt Ben Stokes will let him carry one batting after tea to reach the landmark.

Joe Root meanwhile has passed 50, the 58th time he’s done so in test match cricket.

TEA: England 503-2, Root 52, Pope 197, Campher 0-88 (13), lead by 331

15:41 , Mike Jones

Joe Root shuffles across the crease and tries to nudge Campher away over fine leg. He gets a thick outside edge instead but the ball flies down to third man for four.

50 for Root! Campher drops one short and Root swivels on his back foot to pull the ball away to the square leg boundary. It’s Root’s 58th test match 50 and also brings up England’s 500.

A single off the last ball of the over also brings Root up to 11,000 test runs for his career. Only Alastair Cook has more for England.

England 494-2, Root 43, Pope 197, Hand 1-113 (19), lead by 322

15:36 , Mike Jones

England are coasting towards the tea break. They’re in no rush to add runs and have plenty of gaps and space to pick up singles as both batters come close to their individual milestones.

England 490-2, Root 41, Pope 195, Campher 0-79 (12), lead by 318

15:32 , Mike Jones

With Ireland’s fielders shielding the boundary, England are comfortable with rotating the strike and collecting singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Five runs come from the over.

England 485-2, Root 38, Pope 193, Hand 1-109 (18), lead by 313

15:29 , Mike Jones

Ben Stokes seems to be waiting until tea to make a decision about whether or not to declare. That gives Ollie Pope 10 minutes or so to get the seven runs needed for a double-hundred.

Joe Root is only 12 away from 50 too. They add five to the total from Hand’s 18th over.

England 480-2, Root 36, Pope 190, Campher 0-74 (11), lead by 308

15:25 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope is closing in quickly on a double-hundred. He waits for a slower ball from Curtis Campher and punches a lovely drive through the covers for four.

Four singles are added to the total and England lead by 308.

England 472-2, Root 34, Pope 184, Hand 1-106 (18), lead by 300

15:21 , Mike Jones

Both Root and Pope give themselves room on the legside to find the gaps with drives into the offside. They’re rotating the strike but still collect six runs to bring the lead up to 300.

England 466-2, Root 32, Pope 180, Campher 0-66 (10), lead by 294

15:17 , Mike Jones

Root and Pope record England’s third hundred partnership of the innings. They put on 103 runs from 79 balls.

Curtis Campher sends down a fine over, he hits a good length and keeps the runs down to just two.

England 464-2, Root 31, Pope 179, Hand 1-98 (16), lead by 292

15:13 , Mike Jones

Ireland have completely scattered the field now. There are three fielders close in with the rest hugging the boundary ropes as Fionn Hand returns for a bowl.

A decent over is ruined as Hand bangs a short ball in with his last delivery. Pope leans onto the back foot and lifts a hook shot over the ropes for six!

England 455-2, Root 29, Pope 172, Campher 0-64 (9), lead by 283

15:08 , Mike Jones

England’s 450 is brought up with Ollie Pope cutting Campher away to the point boundary for two runs. He then lifts Campher through the line and over the fielder at wide mid-on for four!

Seven runs come from that over as England’s rate slows down.

England 448-2, Root 28, Pope 166, McBrine 0-86 (12), lead by 276

15:04 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope now has 2000 runs in test match cricket. He’ll fancy a few more for himself before the innings is done.

McBrine drags one short and Pope pulls him away for four more in front of square on the legside.

England’s run rate for the last six overs is over 10. They’ve scored 61 runs in 36 balls.

England 438-2, Root 26, Pope 158, Campher 0-57 (8), lead by 266

15:01 , Mike Jones

150 for Ollie Pope! Curtis Campher returns and is greeted by a wonderful on-drive from England’s No. 3. The ball races away along the deck and brings up his landmark.

Pope cuts the next ball to the fence as well. Pope and Root then milk the rest of the over and take 11 runs from it.

England 427-2, Root 25, Pope 148, McBrine 0-76 (11), lead by 255

14:57 , Mike Jones

This is not the time Andy McBrine wants to bowl. Ollie Pope is looking to be aggressive as he shuffles down the pitch and launches the off-spinner into the stands for six!

Joe Root follows suit when he gets on strike and despatches McBrine over cow corner for a maximum!

England 411-2, Root 16, Pope 141, Hume 1-85 (17), lead by 239

14:52 , Mike Jones

Joe Root’s innings has been a strange one so far. He came to the crease wanting to increase England’s tempo but looked all out of shape and focus.

He’s since reset and is finding the gaps, a back foot punch sails for four to take him into double figures. A similar shot brings up the fifty partnership between Root and Pope as some quick running earns Root three more.

England 402-2, Root 8, Pope 141, Adair 0-119 (19), lead by 230

14:47 , Mike Jones

England bring up their 400 as Root guides the ball away for three runs. Pope dinks the ball into the gap at midwicket to collect another couple of runs as well.

Five from the over, England’s lead stretches to 230.

England 397-2, Root 5, Pope 139, Hume 1-77 (16), lead by 225

14:44 , Mike Jones

Pope is in full white ball mode. He reverse scoops Graham Hume over third man and takes 10 runs from the over. Joe Root has tried that shot a couple of times already but Pope is seeing it like a beach ball and pulls it off.

England 387-2, Root 5, Pope 129, Adair 0-114, lead by 215

14:36 , Mike Jones

Joe Root is keeping a watchful eye on the ball as he plays himself into his innings. He guides Mark Adair down to third man for three before Ollie Pope attempts to unleash.

He strides down the wicket and hacks Adair over midwicket for a couple.

England 377-2, Root 2, Pope 122, Adair 0-105 (17), lead by 205

14:25 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope caresses the ball through the covers for another boundary as he puts England over 200 runs ahead of Ireland. The change of ball is really helping out Ireland.

There’s a lot more swing to deal with as Pope is pinned by an inswinger from Adair.

England 369-2, Root 2, Pope 118, Hume 1-66 (14), lead by 197

14:22 , Mike Jones

Joe Root is away. His classic punch into the legside brings him two runs as England’s lead closes in on 200. Root could use some time in the middle after a spell in the IPL.

How much longer Ben Stokes will keep his team batting is another matter.

England 366-2, Root 0, Pope 117, Adair 0-100 (16), lead by 194

14:16 , Mike Jones

This different ball that Ireland have is doing slightly more off the pitch and Ollie Pope keeps his eye on the ball as he manoeuvres it into the legside.

Joe Root faces the final ball of Adair’s over and is struck on the pad. There seems to be a little inside edge which may have just saved him.

Wicket! Duckett b. Hume 182 (178), England 361-2 (59.5)

14:12 , Mike Jones

The change of ball works for Ireland! Graham Hume comes around the wicket to the left-handed Ben Duckett. He gets one to move back towards the batter and an inside edge from a booming drive diverts the ball onto Duckett’s stumps!

The England opener departs for 182.

England 361-1, Duckett 182, Pope 114, Hume 0-63 (12.4), lead by 189

14:09 , Mike Jones

Ireland enquire about changing the ball in the hopes that a different one may change their fortunes. Graham Hume is brought back into the attack and Ben Duckett flails him away for four runs before getting off strike.

Ollie Pope then dabs one to third man to collect three and brings up the 250 partnership.

England 353-1, Duckett 177, Pope 109, Adair 0-95 (15), lead by 181

14:03 , Mike Jones

This is a rather sedate over for England with just six runs coming from it. Eoin Morgan and Mark Butcher are discussing how England will approach the rest of the day on Sky Sports.

The consensus is that Ben Stokes will declare when he thinks England have a big enough lead.

This partnership is now 244 from 256 balls.

England 347-1, Duckett 176, Pope 104, McBrine 0-60 (10), lead by 175

13:58 , Mike Jones

Ben Duckett is moving through the gears, he takes McBrine for consecutive fours before slog-sweeping him over the ropes for the first six of the innings.

England won’t be held back now, Pope and Duckett will try to pile on the runs as quickly as possible.

England 333-1, Duckett 162, Pope 104, Adair 0-89 (14), lead by 161

13:55 , Mike Jones

Having reached three figures Ollie Pope plans to get England ticking once again. Twice he dances down the track to take on Mark Adair.

The first sees Pope nail the ball down the ground for four before he misses his second effort and gets wrapped on the pads.

England 329-1, Duckett 162, Pope 100, McBrine 0-46 (9), lead by 157

13:51 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope seems a little skittish as he approaches three figures. He tries to pick the gap at midwicket a couple of times but hits the fielder.

Andy McBrine then gets one to grip and hits Pope on the pads as he dances down the track.

There it is! Pope turns the ball slightly wide of mid-on and scampers through to complete his fourth test match hundred!

England 326-1, Duckett 161, Pope 98, Adair 0-85 (13), lead by 154

13:46 , Mike Jones

Mark Adair causes a few issues for Ben Duckett outside the off-stump as he employs a couple of slower balls to change up the pace. The final delivery catches Duckett’s gloves but doesn’t reach Lorcan Tucker behind the stumps.

Afternoon session: England 326-1, Duckett 161, Pope 98, Adair 0-85 (12.1), lead by 154

13:43 , Mike Jones

Ollie Pope is on strike for the first ball of the afternoon session. He clips Mark Adair away for one and inches closer to his hundred.

Ben Duckett leads the way with record hundred as England turn screw on Ireland

13:30 , Mike Jones

Ben Duckett marked his first Test innings on home soil with a chanceless and record-breaking 150 to help England reach lunch on day two on 325 for one with total control of the one-off Test with Ireland.

Duckett had closed the opening day on 60 not out but raced through to his milestone with a succession of drives to bring up his second red-ball century for his country from 106 deliveries.

In his 10th Test since his debut in Bangladesh in 2016, opener Duckett showed why he is the perfect fit for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes’ aggressive ‘Bazball’ style to reach his 150 off the same amount of balls and in the process beat Australian great Don Bradman’s record for the quickest 150 at Lord’s.

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne ‘as hungry as ever’ to score runs

13:20 , Mike Jones

Marnus Labuschagne is hungry to score runs ahead of Australia’s World Test Championship final against India and this summer’s Ashes series.

Australia’s packed summer schedule begins next week against India before they face England in a bid to retain the Ashes.

And Labuschagne admitted he is mentally ready for the upcoming challenges, having become a mainstay at number three in Australia’s batting line-up.

LUNCH: England 325-1

13:10 , Mike Jones

England punished some weak bowling this morning to open up a lead of 153 despite starting the day 20 runs behind.

Ben Duckett recorded his second test match century before kicking on to pass 150, Ollie Pope meanwhile has 97 and should cross three figures early in the afternoon session.

LUNCH: England 325-1, Duckett 161, Pope 97

13:02 , Sonia Twigg

The sun has been shining, the fans are here, it’s been a perfect morning as far as England have been concerned.

Duckett and Pope have looked entirely unflappable at the crease, aside from one missed run-out opportunity and Ireland will be scratching their heads over the interval trying to work out how to breka the partnershpi.

Duckett has scored 100 runs in the morning session of Day 2, from 84 balls, an impressive feat from the 28-year-old, who has left 8 balls out of 605 since he re-joined the Test side under Stokes and McCullum.

Pope will go into the break agonisingly on 97, just three runs short of a century, but it’s been England’s morning.

England 323-1, Duckett 160, Pope 96, Hand 1-89 (15), lead by 151

12:59 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett has 100 runs in the session, never mind overall. It’s been lovely to watch.

Pope hits a two to move on to 94, and pulls down to fine leg for another two, edging closer and finishes the over on 96.

One more over before lunch.

England 315-1, Duckett 157, Pope 92, McBrine 0-41 (7), lead by 143

12:56 , Sonia Twigg

The question now is will Pope be stranded in the 90s at lunch?

England have been utterly dominant this session, they have broken records in a way that has come to define this team under Stokes and McCullum.

Admittedly Ireland haven’t bowled well, but everything slightly short or wide has been punished.

England 312-1, Duckett 155, Pope 91, Hand 1-82 (14), lead by 140

12:51 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett forced to take a single and move on to 149, but England rotate the strike and he has his chance to reach the milestone.

Clubbed into the leg side and it’s 150 for the England opener to a standing ovation as he raises his bat.

Duckett also broke the record for the fastest Test 150 at Lord’s.

England 301-1, Duckett 148, Pope 87, McBrine 0-38 (6), lead by 129

12:47 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett starts McBrine’s over with a boundary that just trickled over the cover boundary.

The ramp is out! Duckett ramps the spinner twice in the 50th over as England bring up the 300.

England 287-1, Duckett 135, Pope 86, Hand 1-71 (13), lead by 115

12:43 , Sonia Twigg

A fairly typical over from Hand, batters remain untroubled and England could not look more comfortable.

Could Ireland be running out of ideas?

England 284-1, Duckett 133, Pope 85, McBrine 0-24 (5), lead by 112

12:39 , Sonia Twigg

Pope finds the boundary with a bottom-handed drive into the overs to move on to 84, the first boundary off McBrine in the match.

Duckett finds his stride again, with a big boundary into the leg side, hitting across the line and over the top, a big over for England.

England 273-1, Duckett 127, Pope 80, Hand 1-68 (12), lead by 101

12:35 , Sonia Twigg

The flow of boundaries has steadied in the last half an hour or so, with Ireland slightly gaining more control with their line and length today.

The runs are still coming relatively easily and they are rotating the strike, but we haven’t seen the big-hitting of earlier in the innings.

Pope perhaps looking a touch frustrated as he comes down the wicket but picks out the fielder at mid off.

England 269-1, Duckett 126, Pope 78, McBrine 0-13 (4), lead by 97

12:32 , Sonia Twigg

There’s a lot of tinkering with the field by McBrine, looking to bring in some fielders as Ireland continue to search for their second wicket.

England 265-1, Duckett 124, Pope 76, Hand 1-65 (11), lead by 93

12:28 , Sonia Twigg

Pope drives a straight one back onto the non-strikers stumps as Hand returns to bowl from the Pavilion End.

A first sign of variable bounce as well as one kept low, Pope swings and misses as the ball skidded under the bat, but too wide to really trouble the batter.

A big appeal next ball, and Ireland have reviewed, potentially out of desperation after Pope was struck on the pad when on 76, but DRS showed the ball going over.

England 265-1, Duckett 124-1, Pope 76, McBrine 0-9 (3), lead by 91

12:23 , Sonia Twigg

McBrine has yet to concede a boundary in his three overs so far today, a semblance of control that has been disctinctly lacking from Ireland’s seam attack.

But he’s bowling and two very set, comfortable-looking batters, although questions will be raised over why he was not introduced earlier/

England 262-1, Duckett 123, Pope 74, Campher 0-46 (7), lead by 90

12:20 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett with a beautiful drive towards the pavilion for four to move on to 120 and looking so comfortable out in the middle here today.

England 254-1, Duckett 116, Pope 73, McBrine 0-6 (2), lead by 82

12:15 , Sonia Twigg

I wouldn’t say McBrine is causing England problems with his off-breaks, but they are finding it harder to score off the spinner, perhaps the lack of pace is playing a part.

Just four off his second over, which sounds like a lot but is below the run-rate.

England 250-1, Duckett 116, Pope 69, Campher 0-38 (6), lead by 78

12:12 , Sonia Twigg

There’s a half appeal from Campher after Pope is struck on the pads, but the bowler was already walking back to his mark as the DRS timer counts down.

That’s the 250 up for England, who are making batting at Lord’s - which has caused many teams problems in the past - look very easy today.

England 246-1, Duckett 114, Pope 67 McBrine 0-2 (1), England lead by 74

12:08 , Sonia Twigg

Ireland have introduced a spinner for the first time in the game, probably with a desire to force something here with England motoring along.

Andy McBrine has just bowled the least expensive over for a while, if not the entire morning with just two from his first over of the match.

England 244-1, Duckett 113, Pope 66, Campher 0-34 (5) England lead by 72

12:01 , Sonia Twigg

That’s drinks after the first hour of play and it has all gone England’s way this morning.

Ireland are struggling here, with Duckett and Pope full of confidence and motoring along, all eyes will be on the run rate, to see how much England could lead by at lunch.

Duckett has left just one ball today and is going at absolutely everything.

England 236-1, Duckett 107, Pope 64, Hand 1-65 (10) lead by 64

11:57 , Mike Jones

Ireland can’t get control of the game. Duckett and Pope are full of confidence and are picking out the gaps at will. They milk Fionn Hand and rotate the strike before Pope opens the face and guides the last ball of the over down to the vacant third man for four.

Eight runs from the over.

England 228-1, Duckett 104, Pope 59, Campher 0-26 (4) lead by 56

11:52 , Mike Jones

Pope drives on the up and places it beautifully between the gap at cover and mid-off. The shot is slightly in the air but there’s no danger of picking out the fielder and he drills it to the boundary.

Curtis Campher tries to correct and straightens up his line only for Pope to whip the ball through midwicket for another perfectly timed boundary.

England 219-1, Duckett 104, Pope 50, Hand 1-57 (9) lead by 47

11:48 , Mike Jones

England are really flying now.

Ollie Pope cuts one away to third man for four before taking a single off the next delivery and scrambling through to reach his half century.

Another boundry for Duckett ends the over with England taking another 10 runs from it.

Ben Duckett goes to one hundred! He flicks Fionn Hand into the legside and beats the fielder at wide mid-on before calling Ollie Pope through for a single.

This is Duckett’s first test match century in England and his second in total.

England 209-1, Duckett 99, Pope 45, Adair 0-84 (12) lead by 37

11:42 , Mike Jones

Mark Adair overpitches and Ben Duckett leans into a lovely drive to spank the ball back down the ground for four runs. Duckett moves into the 90s.

He flicks Adair after for two before guiding the next ball down to fine leg for four more. He moves to 98, two runs away from his second test match century.

Duckett moves to 99 with a punch into the legside before Ollie Pope collects two to end the over. That brings up the 100 partnership too.

England 196-1, Duckett 88, Pope 43, Hand 1-47 (8), lead by 23

11:38 , Sonia Twigg

A change of bowling with Fionn Hand returning from the pavilion end to bowl at Pope.

The first ball was easily let go, but there’s a slight delay as the umpire checks the ball, before the medium-pacer can continue.

Pope picks up four towards third man, just guiding the ball there as he opened the face, as he closes in on a milestone of his own.

England 191 -1, Duckett 88, Pope 39, Adair 0-71 (11), England lead by 19

11:33 , Sonia Twigg

Pope missed one that just had a little bit more bounce from Adair, and almost punished the next delivery which was short.

Duckett is playing the ball absolutely everywhere this morning, with another punch down the ground to move on to 88.

England 186-1, Duckett 84, Pope 38, Hume 0-55 (12), England lead by 14

11:29 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett into the 80’s now, after flinging the bat at a ball outside off stump, and it perfectly found the gap in the field to run towards the boundary.

The bowling has been a bit wayward from Ireland, and it’s not going to get any easier with the sky brightening by the minute almost.

England 179-1, Duckett 78, Pope 37, Adair 0-66 (10), England lead by 7

11:24 , Sonia Twigg

England pressing on here, Duckett playing nicely, but missed one trying to advance down the wicket and acess the leg side.

Duckett, in his first Test match in England moving closer to the century.

England 177-1, Duckett 76, Pope 37, Hume 0-48 (11), England lead by 5

11:20 , Sonia Twigg

Duckett is closing in on his century nicely here, moving on to 75 with a well-timed punch down the ground for 4.

Pope taking his time here, adjusting his gloves and coming down to prod the wicket as some batters choose to do between deliveries, he has found the fielders a bit more than his batting partner in the first few overs this morning.

England 172-1, Duckett 71, Pope 37, Adair 0-64 (9)

11:15 , Sonia Twigg

There was a run-out chance with the first ball, but the throw missed the stumps, both batters were caught in the middle of the pitch.

Ireland have not bowled the best line this morning, Duckett has had a lot of luck with a late dab towards third man.

England 167-1, Duckett 66, Pope 37, Hume 0-43 (10), trail by 5

11:12 , Sonia Twigg

Hume started the over with a tight line, restricting the batters, but a boundary off the final ball from Ollie Pope keeps England’s run rate high and the scoring pushing on

England 160-1, Duckett 65, Pope 31, Adair 0-59 (8), trail by 12

11:07 , Sonia Twigg

A ball past the bat! A hint of something from Ireland, but it didn’t catch the edge, and Duckett was able to rotate the strike next ball with a flick off the legs.

Pope’s intent was evident as he advances down the ground to Irish medium-pacer Mark Adair, but it’s been a tighter over than the opener.

England 159 - 1 Duckett 65, Pope 31, Hume 0-36 (9), trail by 16

11:04 , Sonia Twigg

At the start of the day it looked like Ireland might have to capitalise at the start of the day, with the slightly overcast sky due to clear up throughout the day.

But there was no respite when Duckett cut the first ball for four as England picked up exactly where they left off, capitalising on a poor start from Hume.

He tightened up as the over continued but England were able to keep rotating the strike.

The teams are out in the middle and everything is set for the start of Day 2. Graham Hume will take the first over for Ireland with Ben Duckett on strike resuming on his overnight score of 60.

What is Bazball? How England revolutionised Test cricket

10:54 , Mike Jones

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have neither ripped up the cricket rule book, nor invented a new shot, but they have transformed England’s fortunes from rock bottom to entertainers.

There has always been the old question: ‘How can you not know after almost five days, which side is winning?’ But in cricket’s oldest and longest format, that has often been the case. Until recently when England sought to eliminate one of the outcomes - the draw - from their approach to Test cricket, and re-brand themselves ‘rockstars’.

The result has been thrilling for everyone who has watched England over the past 15 months. The records have tumbled, the team’s fortunes have been transformed, and crowds left wanting more.

Daniel Vettori: England’s winning habit more impressive than style of cricket

10:48 , Mike Jones

Daniel Vettori insists it is England’s winning habit rather than their ‘Bazball’ style that has earned the respect of Australia ahead of this summer’s Ashes.

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have inspired a thrilling revival of England’s Test team, winning 10 out of 12 matches by adopting an aggressive, never say die mindset.

Australia are aiming to retain the Ashes when the series opens at Edgbaston on June 16 and assistant coach Vettori, who played alongside McCullum for New Zealand, insists the hosts’ results trump how they were achieved.

Day 2 of this England vs Ireland test match kicks off at 11am. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope will stride out for England and look to overturn the remaining 20 run deficit.

The Hundred overhaul ‘not something that’s on agenda’ for ECB boss Richard Gould

10:37 , Mike Jones

Richard Gould, the chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, has insisted making changes to the format of The Hundred is “not something that’s on my agenda”.

The peak summer month of August has been controversially ring-fenced for the third season of The Hundred, which still polarises opinion among cricket fans and is exclusively played in the UK.

Reports last month suggested its structure was being considered and the theory gained traction with the news Sanjay Patel, mastermind and managing director of The Hundred, would leave the ECB in September.

Ben Stokes: ‘Superhuman’ England captain’s cricket revolution now faces the ultimate test

10:30 , Mike Jones

It is conceivable that none of England’s greatest cricketing successes over the last five years would have happened without Ben Stokes. The 2019 World Cup, the miracle at Headingley and the 2023 Twenty20 World Cup success hinged on the abilities of one man, who has most recently transformed England’s Test fortunes.

Born in Christchurch, Stokes moved to Cumbria aged 12 after his father was appointed rugby league coach in the area, and New Zealand’s loss proved to be England’s gain.

Stokes’ first Test century came in the hostile conditions at Perth during the ill-fated 2013-14 Ashes, where the then-22-year-old became only the third Englishman to score a century in the city since 1987.

Almost perfect start to big summer – Stuart Broad hails dominant England display

10:17 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad toasted the near-perfect start to a big summer after his five-wicket haul helped England dismiss Ireland for 172 before the hosts finished only 20 runs behind on the opening day of the one-off Test at Lord’s.

Broad ripped through the Irish top order during the first hour on his way to figures of five for 51 from 17 overs to get himself on the Lord’s honours board for the first time since 2013.

James McCollum (36), Paul Stirling (30) and Curtis Campher (33) all made starts but could not kick on with Jack Leach helping himself to three wickets and Matthew Potts securing a brace of scalps.
