England vs Norway LIVE: Euro 2022 result and reaction as Beth Mead nets hat-trick in record goal haul

England face their toughest test of the group stages tonight as they continue their Euro 2022 campaign against Norway at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. This crucial fixture could decide who finishes top of Group A after both teams won their opening fixtures.

The Lionesses won the first match of the tournament 1-0 against Austria last Wednesday, with Beth Mead scoring the only goal of the game in front of a record crowd of 68,871 at Old Trafford. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Sarina Wiegman’s team who will know they need to improve if they hope to defeat Norway and move back to the top of their group.

Norway demolished Northern Ireland 4-1 in their opening fixture in Southampton and took the lead in the goal difference standings. They are a team full of talent including Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg, Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Chelsea’s Guro Reiten but their coach Martin Sjogren has stepped up the mind games by calling his team “underdogs” for the match.

In just one half of football England equalled the record for most goals scored by a single team at the Uefa European Women’s Championship.

It matches England’s 6-2 loss to Germany in the 2009 final and England’s 6-0 win over Scotland in a group stage match in 2017.

That 6-0 win was the biggest margin of victory in the tournaments history before tonight.

The biggest ever margin of victory in a Euros or World Cup is USA beating Thailand 13-0 in 2019. Is that record going to fall too?

England 6-0 Norway

21:00 , Michael Jones

Ellen White then added another goal to her incredible England record when she met Fran Kirby’s cross with a tap-in at the back post.

Her second of the net capped off a record-breaking first half for the Lionesses. No team has led by more goals after the first half of a European Championship match.

England 2-0 Norway

20:26 , Michael Jones

24 mins: Ouch. There’s a bit of concern for Rachel Daly as she tracks back to tackle Karina Saevik and jars her right ankle in the process.

Sarina Wiegman and her coaching staff look as though they’re discussing other options but Daly manages to get back to her feet and she’ll play on.

GOAL! England 1-0 Norway (Stanway, 12’)⚽️

20:13 , Michael Jones

Of course an early goal for the Lionesses would make that job even easier.

Northern Ireland were outclassed on their major tournament debut as Norway romped to a comprehensive 4-1 Euro 2022 victory in Southampton.

First-half finishes from Julie Blakstad and Frida Maanum, plus a Caroline Graham Hansen penalty, put the two-time European champions on course for a routine success to dampen an historic occasion for their opponents.

Defender Julie Nelson – Northern Ireland’s most-capped female player – gave the competition’s lowest-ranked nation brief hope of an unlikely comeback by heading in a landmark goal just after the interval.

But Guro Reiten’s free-kick sealed a routine success for Martin Sjogren’s side to move them level on three points with hosts England at the top of Group A.

Euro 2022: England’s opportunity to showcase pedigree on home soil as Continent’s finest awaits

18:11 , Michael Jones

The last time England hosted the Women’s European Championship, only one part of England really saw any of it, writes Northern Football Correspondent Mark Critchley.

The eight-team tournament in 2005 was played entirely within the confines of the North West, stretching as far north as Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road but no further south than the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington. Germany ran out 3-1 winners against Norway at Ewood Park in front of a crowd of 21,105. England finished bottom of their group, by the way.

Seventeen years later, the next three-and-a-half weeks promise to demonstrate how much has changed since. It all begins in the North West once again – England host Austria at Old Trafford in tonight’s curtain-raiser – and although there is strangely no North East representation, the 10 venues stretch from Leigh down to Brighton, and the tournament will culminate in a Wembley final that has already sold all 87,200 tickets. More than 500,000 have been sold across all of the games.

That is not only a record but double the total sold for the last Euros in the Netherlands five years ago. The worldwide broadcast audience for the 2017 tournament hit 178 million but that too is set to be comfortably surpassed. Whereas Channel 4’s live coverage largely focused on the fate of the home nations then, every match will be available to watch across the BBC’s platforms now. This will be the biggest Euros yet, demonstrating the rapid pace of the game’s progress. And so, it is perhaps only right to stop and take a breath.

Euro 2022: England vs Norway

18:06 , Michael Jones

This is the first ever meeting between England and Norway in the Women’s European Championships finals. England have won five of their last eight matches against Norway in all competitions (one draw, two defeats) although they lost their most recent meeting in a friendly in September 2019.

Before this run, the Lionesses had lost 11 of their first 12 games (one draw) against Norway between 1981 and 2002.

Euro 2022: England under ‘massive pressure’ claims Norway boss

17:56 , Michael Jones

England are under “massive pressure” to deliver at their home European Championship but have a genuine chance of glory, according to Norway boss Martin Sjogren.

Sjogren’s side warmed up for a tantalising Euro 2022 showdown with the Lionesses by easing to a 4-1 win over tournament debutants Northern Ireland on Thursday in Southampton.

The Swede expects a “totally different” challenge in Norway’s second Group A match as he seeks to burst the bubble of Sarina Wiegman’s hosts following the joy of their 1-0 win over Austria in front of a record-breaking attendance of 68,871 at Old Trafford.

Euro 2022: ‘England feel the pressure of playing at home’ says Sjogren

17:51 , Michael Jones

Norway boss Martin Sjogren has suggested that nerves played a big part in England’s underwhelming performance Austria despite the Lionesses winning the match 1-0.

He also said his team were "definitely underdogs" as England are ranked three places higher and are one of the favourites to win the whole tournament.

"England is one of the big favourites for the tournament. I think England feels quite a lot of pressure from being at home, being one of the favourites," he said.

"They’ve had very good performances, especially in the preparations before the Euros. England need to be the favourites in this game going into it."

Norway are currently top of Group A on goal difference with both teams winning their opening matches and England boss Sarina Wiegman has brushed off suggestions that the Lionesses were under more pressure as tournament hosts. Speaking to the press on Sunday she said:

"Tomorrow is just a game. We want to win and they want to,

"If they want to be the underdog, that’s fine. I think they have a very strong squad and we do too. I expect an open match so let’s see where it goes. Obviously I hope we win it."

Euro 2022: Players to Watch - Lauren Hemp

17:46 , Michael Jones

Hosts England have a formidable attack and one of the players to have frequently shone within it is Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp.

The 21-year-old, who was part of Great Britain’s side at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, heads into her first major tournament with the Lionesses after a season in which she broke her duck for the team – in her 14th cap – when notching four times against Latvia last November, and registered 21 goals and 10 assists for City.

She was named PFA young player of the year for a third successive season and fourth time in total.

Euro 2022: Players to Watch - Ada Hegerberg

Barcelona were beaten 3-1 in this year’s Champions League final by Lyon, with Ada Hegerberg, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, key to the French side’s victory.

The 26-year-old forward scored one goal, extending her record tally in the competition to 59, and teed up another as she continued her comeback from injury that began in October after more than 18 months out.

Now her attention turns to the Euros, having returned to the Norway squad in March five years on from stepping away from the team, unhappy with the way women’s football was being run in the country.

Euro 2022: Full schedule and venues for England, Northern Ireland and more

17:37 , Michael Jones

Euro 2022 is finally underway after the tournament was postponed by a year due to the pandemic.

England have the chance to claim victory on home soil after falling short at the semi-final stage in the 2019 World Cup and the Lionesses remain unbeaten since head coach Sarina Wiegman took charge.

Spain are considered the slight favourites to clinch glory, while France and the Netherlands will also provide a major threat - although the Lionesses hammered the reigning European champions 5-1 in a warm-up match - while England must nullify Ada Hegerberg and avoid a slip-up against Norway in the group stage.

Beth Mead’s 16th-minute finish proved the only goal of the tournament curtain-raiser at Old Trafford, which had a competition-record crowd of 68,871 in attendance.

England next face Norway at Brighton’s Amex stadium tonight before playing Northern Ireland on Friday at St Mary’s stadium in Southampton.

Euro 2022: England squad news

17:26 , Michael Jones

Lotte Wubben-Moy is out of the England squad after a positive Covid-19 test and has returned home whilst she recovers from the illness.

Norway have a strong attacking threat and Sarina Wiegman may decide to move Leah Williamson back into midfield, restore the defensive partnership of Millie Bright and Alex Greenwood at centre-back.

Beth Mead will likely keep her place ahead of Chloe Kelly but Alessia Russo could replace Ellen White to lead England’s attack.

Our predicted line-ups:

England: Earps; Bronze, Bright, Greenwood, Daly; Walsh, Williamson; Mead, Kirby, Hemp; Russo

Norway: Pettersen; Sonstevold, Mjelde, Thorisdottir, Blakstad; Maanum, Engen; Eikeland, Graham Hansen, Reiten; Hegerberg

Euro 2022: ‘This start is so important’: Sarina Wiegman satisfied after England win opener

17:08 , Michael Jones

England boss Sarina Wiegman described the winning start to Euro 2022 as important while stressing her side can perform better after the Lionesses opened their home campaign with a 1-0 victory over Austria.

Beth Mead’s 16th-minute finish proved the only goal of the tournament curtain-raiser at Old Trafford, which had a competition-record crowd of 68,871 in attendance.

Wiegman said in her post-match press conference: “It’s a good win, and this start is so important. It gives such a boost to the team and the crowd.

“We had some very good moments in the game, we created a lot of chances and we should have scored a little more. But we had also some hard moments in the game and got through, so that’s really good I think.”

Euro 2022: Beth Mead goal edges England past Austria as hosts get Euro 2022 off to winning start

An occasion to remember, and a result that goes down in history. As for the performance, well, what’s the usual line about opening games? The only thing that really matters is getting the win, and that’s all the more important in an opening game that mattered more than any other.

This 1-0 victory over Austria at Old Trafford was a day that the women’s game in England had waited so long for, a fact that made any extra nerves in those tortuous last few minutes entirely understandable.

It’s at times like this that people say only one detail really matters but, actually, there were two. With a capacity crowd at Old Trafford of 68,871, it was a new record for the Women’s Euros.

England marked that in the best way possible, with victory.

England vs Norway

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of England’s second Euro 2022 fixture as they take on Norway at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.

The Lionesses won their opening game last Wednesday when they defeated Austria 1-0 thanks to Beth Mead’s first goal of the tournament. Tonight’s opponents, Norway, also won their opening fixture as they swept Northern Ireland aside 4-1 to collect three points and take the top spot in Group A through their superior goal difference.

England boss, Sarina Wiegman, will be without the services of defender Lotte Wubben-Moy tonight after the 23-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 and left the squad on Friday. She will continue to be monitored and will return after she has recovered from the illness.

Yet, she’ll miss the biggest game of the tournament so far for England. The winner of tonight’s game will move to the top of the group and this evening’s result could determine the order in which the teams progress to the knockout stages.
