Local ties to Vermont are dealing with the devastating floods

The major flooding in Vermont and parts of New Hampshire has people on the move. Some people were on vacation heading back. Some were on their way to vacation. This major flooding made some of that very difficult.

Ed Schunk says his summer vacation came just in time. “We saw our road was washed out,” Schunk said. His family is leaving Vermont and heading to Cape Cod.

Leslie Stroud’s mother lives near hard-hit Ludlow, Vermont but right now they are not planning to evacuate her. “During Irene, they got stuck in their house for 5-6 days,” Stroud said.

Many areas of Vermont are battling destructive floodwaters and the heavy rains are inundating it’s rivers and lakes.

Parts of New Hampshire are also flooding.

Betsy Dexter and her husband were on their way to check on a property. “Our lake is up 7 feet. Our dock is about 5 feet underwater and the house is about three inches from flooding,” said Dexter.

The Dexters say they never flood so they have no insurance for this. “We’ll probably lose a lot of hardwood floors,” said Dexter.

Tom Gonska is on his way from Maine to check on his Vermont summer cabin.

“We are in an area that is prone to flooding and they named the two towns we are from, Stamford and Wilmington as roads closed and wash out,” said Gonska.

He’s thankful he has his all-terrain vehicle with him – just in case.

“It will go through any mud or water we are going to need unless it is raging so we will be okay,” said Gonska.
